    • A television system allows a viewer of a text-enhanced television program to pause the program at a particular frame, browse the enhancements at his or her leisure, and then resume viewing the program from that frame, without losing continuity of the video and enhancement portions of the program, or program content. This is accomplished by time-shifting the television program for later playback. Time-shifting is accomplished through the use of mass storage devices such as semiconductor memory, optical disks, magnetic storage and other FIFO data storage structures. Markers are available that allow the viewer to return to the program at the point that he stopped watching, replaying the program from that point. Text enhancements are provided through the VBI present in a conventional television broadcast signal, through an Internet connection, or by a wireless means such as a pager or cordless telephone. Additionally a back link may be utilized to allow the viewer to summon the text enhancements or interact with the enhancements already present.

    • Methods and apparatus provide for a Content Inserter to determine location(s) for secondary content in streaming video. The Content Inserter receives a set of video frames and analyzes data differential(s) occurring in the set of video frames to identify secondary content locations between adjacent video frames. The Content Inserter inserts secondary content at the location(s) for secondary content. A data differential can be a change in subtitle information between video frames, a change in audio data between video frames, a difference in content ratings between regions of video frames, and/or difference in activity levels between regions of video frames. Activity levels correspond to changes in pixel color data of video frames. Thus, the Content Inserter identifies secondary content locations based on characteristics of each video stream and ensures that inserted secondary content is placed in a video stream so that the secondary content will most likely be viewed.

    • A method for editing the playback speed of a partial sequence of video and a digital device therefor are disclosed. A video editing method includes providing a timeline interface corresponding to a video sequence, receiving a first user input for specifying a first location on the timeline interface and a second user input for specifying a second location on the timeline interface, setting an editing interval between the first location and the second location of the timeline interface, receiving a third user input with respect to the editing interval, adjusting at least one of the thickness and length of the editing interval in response to the third user input, and editing playback attributes of the partial sequence based on the adjusted thickness and length of the editing interval.

    • Viewing history regarding one or more instances of media content is generated for subsequent analysis. The viewing history is developed based on recording timestamps associated with one or more instances that viewing of the media content is interrupted, paused, terminated, etc. The timestamps can be supplemented with metadata associated with the media content (e.g., media title, genre, duration, actor, actress, etc.) along with information collected from the communication system conveying the media content. By data mining the timestamps in conjunction with other pertinent data it is possible to determine why a viewer may not have viewed the media content in its entirety, as well as recommend future content. Analysis of the viewing history can be performed in conjunction with previously stored viewing histories, along with other viewers viewing histories, etc., to gain a broader understanding of a viewing history for a given media content.
