    • A method and apparatus for transmitting a notification of a shutdown event includes a communication terminal turning off or otherwise shutting down and prior to turning off sending a notification to a third party device such as an access point, base station, server, or proxy, that identifies information relating to the shutting down of the terminal such as a location, purpose for the shutdown and other relevant information. Subsequent devices that attempt to establish a communication connection with the terminal may then receive the notification or information from the notification via the third party device. The sending of information relating to the notification or the notification by the third party can also trigger another action. One example of such an action is the forwarding of the communication connection request to another device to receive that request based upon a predefined rule or a predefined forwarding address.

    • The present inventions relates to a method for establishing a call in a telecommunications network (100), the telecommunications network (100) comprising first and packet network sections (110, 120), a wide area packet network (130), and a TDM transit network section (140). Subscribers' terminal equipment (112, 122) is addressable by directory numbers, and calls to subscribers are always routed through the TDM transit network (140). During TDM call setup at least one message or information element is conveyed to the second packet network section, the at least one message or information element being indicative of the first terminal equipment's packet capabilities and/or an address of a first controlling device (116, 114A) controlling the call in the first packet network section (110). In the second packet network section (120), said message or information element is received at a second controlling device (126, 124A) controlling the call in the second packet network section (120). Using the information extracted from said at least one message or information element a second connection between the first and second terminal equipment (112, 122) through the wide area packet network (130) is established by means of the first and second controlling device (116, 126, 114A, 124A).

    • A method and system are provided for converging time division multiplexing (TDM) communication networks and packet based networks. Signaling may be monitored between TDM network elements by a Convergence Resource Manager (CRM) to identify calls that may be re-directed over a packet network to an end node with another associated CRM; the re-directed call bypassing much of the TDM network. Installation of a CRPd typically does not require any configuration changes to the TDM network such as point codes. A self learning CRM may also be provided so that a routing database may be automatically built. An originating SS7 message may be modified by a self learning CRM to add a Tag which identifies the originating node. As the modified message traverses the SS7 network, any other self learning CRMS in the network report to the originating self learning CRM that the message has been seen. The last reporting self learning CRM is then associated with the dialed number for future routing of originating calls over the packet network, directly to the last reporting self learning CRM and end network node, thus flattening the TDM network.
