    • Digital still picture signals are processed for compression. A picture signal is divided into successive blocks containing data corresponding to different portions of a still picture. A selected block for the still picture is compared to an area of the picture defined by a plurality of previous blocks to try to locate a set of data in the area that is similar to the selected block. An error signal is generated that indicates the difference between the selected block and the best fit block of previously received data for the picture. Both the error signal and the current block are compressed. The amount of data in the compressed error signal is compared to the amount of data in the compressed current block to determine which provides the least amount of data for communication to a data receiver. An offset vector is appended to each selected error signal to identify the portion of the previously received picture data in which the corresponding best fit block resides. A data receiver recovers the digital still picture data by applying the offset vector for each received compressed error signal to a previously received area of the still picture data to recover the best fit block required to recreate the current data set from the received error signal.

    • A system for compressing the digitized images of documents so that they take up less memory space. The system is comprised of discrimination logic which scans the uncompressed image vertically in a swath through the middle of the raster lines and collects data regarding the raster lines which have a number of black pixels which exceed a user defined threshold. Interrupts are generated to cause a microprocessor to collect the data and write a vertical profile of the document. The microprocessor then causes the discrimination logic to scan unsuspected text lines horizontally and collect data regarding the columns which have a number of black pixels which exceed a user defined threshold. Interrupts are generated to cause the microprocessor to collect the data and write a horizontal document profile. After the profiling stage, the microprocessor examines the profiles and determines the zones wherein the blank spaces are integer multiples of the smallest blank spaces and labels these zones as text. The microprocessor then identifies these text zones to a compression engine which deletes every other pixel on each line and deletes every other line in text zones.

    • A data transmission system for providing error protection of transmitted data words. The less significant bits of a data word are, by means of matrix multiplication, encoded into a first redundant proto-code word and the more significant bits are, by means of further matrix multiplication and delay by different word recurrence intervals encoded in a set of further redundant proto-code words. A composite of the proto-code word is formed by means of a modulo-2-addition of code words, so that for the less significant data bits a block code is realized, while for the more significant data bits a convolutional encoding is realized. In the decoding, the more significant bits of the composite code word are decoded by means of Viterbi decoding, the Viterbi metric being determined from the deviation between the reconstructed contribution of the less significant bits to such code word and the actually received contribution of such bits to such code word.
