    • Disclosed is a light emitting device having a plurality of light emitting cells. The light emitting device comprises a thermally conductive substrate, such as a SiC substrate, having a thermal conductivity higher than that of a sapphire substrate. The plurality of light emitting cells are connected in series on the thermally conductive substrate. Meanwhile, a semi-insulating buffer layer is interposed between the thermally conductive substrate and the light emitting cells. For example, the semi-insulating buffer layer may be formed of AlN or semi-insulating GaN. Since the thermally conductive substrate having a thermal conductivity higher than that of a sapphire substrate is employed, heat-dissipating performance can be enhanced as compared with a conventional sapphire substrate, thereby increasing the maximum light output of a light emitting device that is driven under a high voltage AC power source. In addition, since the semi-insulating buffer layer is employed, it is possible to prevent an increase in a leakage current through the thermally conductive substrate and between the light emitting cells.

    • Disclosed is a light emitting device having a plurality of light emitting cells and a package having the same mounted thereon. The light emitting device includes a plurality of light emitting cells which are formed on a substrate and each of which has an N-type semiconductor layer and a P-type semiconductor layer located on a portion of the N-type semiconductor layer. The plurality of light emitting cells are bonded to a submount substrate. Accordingly, heat generated from the light emitting cells can be easily dissipated, so that a thermal load on the light emitting device can be reduced. Meanwhile, since the plurality of light emitting cells are electrically connected using connection electrodes or electrode layers formed on the submount substrate, it is possible to provide light emitting cell arrays connected to each other in series. Further, it is possible to provide a light emitting device capable of being directly driven by an AC power source by connecting the serially connected light emitting cell arrays in reverse parallel to each other.

    • An article of jewelry includes a plurality of settings coupled to each other by slidable links and an elastic member threaded through the settings extending substantially parallel to the links in a “string”. The settings may include stones or any other decorative element. According to one embodiment, the ends of the string are coupled to each other without the use of a clasp. The elasticity of the elastic member keeps the settings close together with little or no space between them but allows the string to be stretched thereby separating the settings by the length of the links. According to the first embodiment, where no clasp is used, the string and the links are dimensioned such that when the string is stretched the article can be fit over a body part such as a wrist or ankle and remain in place when released. According to the second embodiment which utilizes a clasp, the string may be dimensioned to fit around a human neck like a choker and the elastic member will allow for some variation in neck size.

    • An apparatus for measuring distance in the game of golf includes an electro-mechanical DriveGauge.TM. which is provided with a large, easy-to-read display and which registers the player's strides in yards. The apparatus is preferably contained in an attractive housing having a belt clip and the display is mounted "upside down" so that the player may read the display without removing the apparatus from his/her belt. A large prominently colored reset button is preferably provided adjacent to the display so that the display may be quickly and easily reset to zero after a measurement is noted by the player. According to a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, an electromechanical transducer is coupled through a noise filter to a counter which is coupled through a display control and driver to a large four digit LCD display. A clock oscillator is coupled to a system clock unit which provides clock signals for the noise filter and the display control and driver. A stride register is set by a setting unit and provides output to the counter. The noise filter prevents extraneous mechanical vibration of the unit from registering as a player's stride. The LCD display preferably displays up to 999.9 yards in increments of 0.1 yards. In order to set the stride register, the player inputs the distance in feet using the setting unit using a single button which is pressed repeatedly, each press representing 0.1 feet.
