    • The present invention is directed towards providing event-triggered communication in a half duplex communication environment of a wireless communication network (10). A first end terminal (12) sends a selection of an end terminal (14) in a group of terminals to act as an event notifying device to a server (22). The event notifying device (14) compares an event with a threshold and sends an event notifier to the server if the event exceeds the threshold. If it receives the event notifier, the server prioritises data from the event notifying device over ongoing communication sessions for other devices in the group, receives data from the event notifying device associated with the event notifier and transports data indicative of the event to other devices of the group, in order to inform them of the event.

    • A telecommunications network (10) comprises a group call service server (18) which facilitates a group call over a radio interface (32) between different user equipment units (30) in a defined group within the telecommunications network. The group call service server (18) receives a floor request from a requesting user equipment unit (32j) included in the group, and handles the floor request based on a media type associated with the floor request. In conjunction with such handling, in one aspect of its operation the group call service server prioritizes the floor request from the user equipment unit based on the media type (e.g., based on delay sensitivity of the media type associated with the floor request). In one example implementation, the group call service server comprises a queue (42) and a floor request handler (40). The group call service server queues the floor request from the requesting user equipment in the queue (42); the floor request handler (40) prioritizes the floor request within the queue based on the media type. In a specific example implementation, the group call service is Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) and the group call service server comprises PoC server situated in a service network. Also provided are a group call service which handles the floor request based on a media type, and a message format for the floor request itself.

    • A terminal (30, 30B) receives transmissions in a form of a media stream. The terminal comprises a jitter buffer (40) which receives data comprising the media stream and a buffer manager (80). The buffer manager (80) makes a selection between plural playback pointers as an operative playback pointer from which the data comprising the media stream is played out of the jitter buffer. In an example implementation, the buffer manager (80) updates at least one of the plural playback pointers. The manner and timing of the updating of the least one of the plural playback pointers can occur in any of a variety of ways. The terminal (30, 30B) can take various forms, and may be (for example) either a wireless terminal which receives the media stream across a radio interface, or a wireline terminal.

    • A terminal (such as that belonging to or carried by an emergency first responder, for example) participates in a push to talk multicast group in either of two modes or levels. In a first mode or first level of participation, the terminal can join a multicast address for the push to talk multicast group as a passive recipient of transmissions and can thereby listen to the multicast address. In a second mode or second level of participation, the terminal becomes an active participant in the push to talk session. As an active participant in the push to talk session, the terminal can, e.g., receive sender identification (e.g., identification of other participants who may be talking in the push to talk multicast group) and send media bursts to the multicast group.

    • A method and application server for providing different services and performing service changes in a multimedia communication system. When a first client invites a second client to join a multimedia session, the server learns which media types are supported by each client, including first and second media types supported by the server. The first client then sends the server a request on a media control channel to transmit media of the first and second types. The server verifies the requested media types are supported by the second client and sends the first client a grant for the requested media types. The server receives a first media burst of the first media type from the first client and retransmits the burst to the second client, and then receives a second media burst of the second media type from the first client and retransmits the burst to the second client.
