    • Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for supporting a model including descriptions of modeling language entities in a visual modeling environment. A method includes providing a visual modeling tool and modeling language entities being entities of a language of expressing applications designed in a visual modeling language environment, receiving input defining an application in the visual modeling language environment, and generating a platform-independent model of the application based on the input and the modeling language entities. In that method, the modeling language entities have a corresponding syntactic description that can be in accordance with the language, the input defines the application as a selection of the modeling language entities and a configuration of the selection, and the platform-independent model includes the selection, the configuration, and a syntactic description of the modeling language entities in the selection.

    • Described are methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for encapsulating a set of changes to a software application. A template is defined that includes a plurality of tasks to accomplish the set of changes to the software application. The template is associated with a plurality of development objects. An identification of a development object is received and one or more templates associated with the development object are identified. An identification of a selected template from the one or more templates is received and the selected template is applied to generate the development object.

    • Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implement techniques for visualizing data dependencies. A specification of a component encapsulating one or more controllers is received. Each controller has an associated data structure of data elements. The component includes one or more data mappings, where each data mapping is either a context mapping or a model mapping. A context mapping binds the data element to another data element. A model mapping specifies a supply function operable to derive a value of the data element from a model. A data dependency relationship is derived whenever there is at least one data mapping between the controller and another controller or a model. Each data dependency relationship is directed from a controller to one other controller or to one of the models. A data dependency relationship is visualized by displaying a link showing a direction of data dependency.
