    • A multi-segmented flextensional transducer includes a plurality of electroplated electroactive members which deform in concert when energized by an electrical field. Each electroactive member has a convex surface at both ends. A connection member with opposing concave surfaces is disposed between adjacent electroactive members. The electroactive members are arranged such that the convex faces of each intermediate electroactive member engage a concave face of an adjacent connection member, thus forming a cooperative array or "train" of electroactive members and connection members. The opposite ends of the train of electroactive members and connection members is received by a frame which holds the end electroactive members in fixed relative position. The electroactive members are high deformation flextensional piezoelectric elements. When energized, each electroactive member individually deforms, and the entire array deforms in concert an amount significantly exceeding that of the individual electroactive members.

    • An apparatus for producing an acoustic output in an underwater environmentncludes a radiator having a generally elongate, circular x-section with first and second ends, the outer surface of the radiator having a curved shape; an end cap attached to each end of the radiator; and a plurality of piezoceramic elements positioned and arranged to form stacks located exterior to the radiator and between the end caps. The radiator and the end caps seal off the interior of the radiator and provide an air tight cavity interior to the radiator. When a fluctuating voltage is applied across the piezoceramic stacks, the stacks are caused to longitudinally expand and contract in concert with the applied voltage thus inducing a displacement of the end caps. Since the ends of the radiator are attached to the end caps, the radiator is caused to flex inwardly and outwardly as the end caps move longitudinally. The present invention provides a greater specific power output; a useful, dry space interior to the radiator; and enhanced cooling of the piezoceramic elements.

    • A sound generator comprises a transducer (3) intended to be supplied with a signal having a frequency determining the sound to be produced and having a variable amplitude (envelope). To this effect, the transducer is connected in series with the principal path of a semiconductor component (5).     • An acoustic transducer comprises two pairs of opposite elongate segments (20) placed inside a deformable tube (14). Drive means (22) operable to expand in a direction orthogonal to the axis of the tube are disposed between the segments of each pair. The drive means occupy a substantial portion of the inside volume of the tube. A preferred arrangement includes drive means for a pair of segments longitudinally displaced from the drive means for the other pair. Drive means may be constituted by stacks of piezoelectric pellets (24) extending radially relative to the axis of the tube. A pressure compensation system is provided to keep the pressure inside the tube (14) substantially equal to the external pressure. Longitudinal flutes (14a) are formed inside the tube (14) between the segments (20) to facilitate tube deformation and amplify volume variation.
