    • A method and apparatus for traffic safety are provided using vehicle driving-related information obtained on the basis of a transmission/reception beam pair of a road side unit (RSU) and a vehicle on-board unit (OBU), thereby reducing a probability that vehicle collisions occur where visual fields may be obscured. The method includes setting a path from a current location of the electronic device to a destination, and transmitting a message indicating an emergency situation to other devices located on the path while moving to the destination. The method further includes determining a transmission/reception beam pair of the electronic device and a road apparatus, using a reference signal received from the road apparatus, transmitting a signal including information for the transmission/reception beam pair to the road apparatus, and receiving, from the road apparatus, a message warning that the electronic device and another neighboring electronic device are approaching each other.

    • The disclosed approaches for processing traffic signal priority requests include receiving traffic signal priority requests from a vehicle. The number of stopped vehicles at the intersection and on an approach to the intersection is determined in response to receiving each priority request. An activation threshold is computed as a function of an estimated-time-of-arrival (ETA) threshold and the number of stopped vehicles. A vehicle ETA of the vehicle at the intersection is determined in response to each priority request. In response to the vehicle ETA being less than the activation threshold, the priority request is submitted for preemption service processing at the intersection. In response to the vehicle ETA being greater than the activation threshold, submission of the priority request is bypassed for preemption service processing at the intersection.

    • Traffic at an intersection, or other portion of a road, is detected, and the stop/go traffic signal apparatus at the intersection, or other portion is controlled based on vehicle types in the detected traffic. A vehicle type may be determined based on information collected by that vehicle's onboard telematics unit, or with a user's device in communication therewith. An input may be received from a user device, onboard the vehicle, to request changing the current stop/go configuration of the traffic signal. The request may be processed based on the determined vehicle type to determine whether or not to change the traffic signal in response to the request. The request may be accompanied by an offer of money, and if the request is not granted, the user device may forward another request associated with a different offer.

    • A system and method for controlling a hot pursuit situation in which an electronic device is attached to a fleeing vehicle to be tracked by projecting it, as by shooting it from a firearm, against the fleeing vehicle. The device is contained in a frangible pellet, having an outer casing containing a sticky substance coating the electronic device contained within that will be attached to the fleeing vehicle upon impact. In addition to containing circuitry for tracking the vehicle, the circuitry of the pellets contain circuitry to change traffic lights in the vicinity of the vehicle to green for the fleeing vehicle so crossing traffic is prevented from moving in front of the fleeing vehicle at an intersection through which the fleeing vehicle is passing.

    • A priority control unit is provided for use with light-based and GPS-based traffic control priority systems. The priority control unit includes a light emitter subsystem that is configured to emit pulses of light. The pulses of light encode a priority request for activating preemption of a traffic signal by a light-based traffic control priority system. The priority control unit also includes a GPS-based subsystem that is configured to transmit a priority request by radio waves. The priority request from the GPS-based subsystem is for activating preemption of a traffic signal by a GPS-based traffic control priority system. A switch is coupled to the light emitter subsystem and to the GPS-based subsystem. The switch simultaneously activates both the light emitter subsystem and the GPS-based subsystem for transmitting priority requests in response to user control. In another embodiment, the priority control unit further includes a broadcast based subsystem for transmitting priority requests.
