    • A restriction insert adapted to be mounted on a spider of an extrusion die has a generally hollow body formed by integral first and second conical walls wherein the first conical wall has a larger inner diameter than that of the second conical wall. A pair of spaced axially extending material inner flow passages are formed concentrically about the axial bore opening in an outer end of the second conical wall and communicates with the interior of the body. A frustro-conical shaped groove is formed in the outer end of the second conical wall within the interior of the body to provide a tapered flow path for the material entering the inner flow passages. A pair of outer flow passages are formed concentrically in an annular shoulder at the junction of the conical walls. A generally pointed annular edge is formed on the interior of the second conical wall and in combination with the tapered inner surface of the first conical wall form tapered flow paths for the material entering the outer flow passages. The outer flow passages radially overlap adjacent ends of the inner flow passages whereby two concentric sleeves of material are produced which are radially compressed together in forming the final tubular extrudate to eliminate uneven gauge and trapped air caused by the flow of material around spider legs prior to passing through the extrusion orifice.

    • An injection molding apparatus includes a plasticizer (A) for plasticizing plastic pellets. An accumulator head (B) includes a plasticized material receiving entrance (40) for receiving the plasticized material. A mandrel (14) is disposed centrally within the outer body such that an annular cavity (12) is defined therebetween. A ram assembly (16) is mounted in the annular cavity for longitudinally reciprocating motion therein. Reciprocation of the ram assembly urges accumulated plasticized material through a downstream die (C). The ram assembly includes an outer ram member (30), an intermediate ram member (34), and an inner ram member (36). The ram members define a first passage array (60) between the intermediate and outer ram members and a second passage array (70) between the inner and intermediate ram members. The first and second passage arrays are operatively connected with the outer body plasticized material entrance to receive plasticized material therefrom and are operatively connected with the outer body cavity to discharge concentric annular flows of plasticized material thereto.

    • A feedblock fashioned from a plurality of plates is disclosed which distributes two flows of dissimilar synthetic resinous materials into a radially stratified annular form for extrusion by a pipehead die. The feedblock is mounted on a pipehead with the plurality of plates defining material flow channels for three strata. Independently operable valves vary stratum thickness and assure radially matched flow conditions between strata at confluence. Each stratum is independently accelerated through a convergent channel to assure that a uniform circumferential distribution of flow conditions develops. Moreover, two strata are developed through channel systems which do not induce circumferential maldistribution. The third stratum is handled to eliminate circumferential maldistribution. Accordingly, the process and apparatus develop stable annular flow with radial stratification having neither radial nor circumferential maldistributions that may later interact to distort the strata.

    • In an extrusion system wherein a single source of molten extrudable material is utilized to provide feed to a plurality of extrusion lines, the rate of flow of extrudable material from the source thereof to the plurality of extrusion lines is controlled to provide a preselected total product output rate. The position of a flow control valve means associated with each extrusion line is controlled to maintain a preselected material supply pressure upstream of said plurality of extrusion lines and to provide a preselected relationship among the measured production rates of said plurality of extrusion lines. In a preferred embodiment, an extrusion system having two extrusion lines supplied by a single source of molten extrudable material is controlled to provide a preselected total production rate, a preselected molten material source pressure, and a preselected balance between the extrusion rates of the two extrusion lines.
