    • A transducer for use in surface ship applications includes a prestress element for providing additional compressive force to an electromechanical driver disposed within the transducer. The transducer includes a shell having inner portions, an electromechanical driver having end portions coupled to inner portions of the shell, and a block prestress element disposed between one of the end portions of the driver and the inner portions of the shell. The block prestress element is fabricated from a shape memory alloy which can be deformed within a first temperature range and reverts back to its original shape when exposed to a temperature above the first temperature range. This characteristic provides for the generation of additional stresses which may be desired for providing protection to the electromechanical driver from unwanted tensile forces. This approach for providing additional compressive force to the driver allows the insertion of the stacked ceramic electromechanical driver within the shell with prestress levels generally not achievable without possible damage to the shell.

    • Various configurations of cylindrically shaped transducers are used as borehole seismic wave sources. The basic class of transducers of this invention has an outer shell that is generally cylindrical, and may be comprised of cylindrical sections. The shell or the sections may be pre-stressed or preformed to encourage certain bending motions. Depending on the configuration of the transducer, it approximates a monopole, dipole, or quadrupole radiator. Various actuating means, including magnetostrictive forces and piezoelectric forces, are used to drive the motions of the transducer. These transducers are especially useful for generating compressional, shear, or other elastic waves in solids. For example, in geophysical applications, the transducers are placed in boreholes for either hole-to-hole or single hole measurements.

    • A high power, low frequency flextensional transducer for underwater use comprises a number of spaced piezo-electric element stacks between opposed inserts. The stacks are placed on the plane through the major axis of an elliptical flexural shell and the inserts are shaped to conform with the elliptical shape. The stacks are assembled with first tapered supports and complementary tapered slides are wedged between the shell inserts and the tapered supports until a required pre-stress is exerted by the shell on the piezo-electrical stacks. End-plates are attached to the elliptical shell to complete the transducer; the shell having a compression bonded layer of neoprene applied, including a peripheral serrated lip seal to seal against the end-plate while permitting flexing of the shell. A means to provide wide band-width performance is also disclosed. To extend the range of operational depths the cavity within the transducer is filled with a gas whose vapour pressure can be temperature-controlled.

    • A shock wave generator suitable for use in an extracorporeal lithotripsy device to disintegrate calculi in a life form in vivo has a flat coil connectable to a high voltage supply, a membrane assembly disposed opposite the coil and a housing, closed on one side by the membrane, filled with a shock wave transmissive fluid. The membrane assembly has a carrier plate of electrically insulating material, and an electrically conductive section applied at one side of the carrier. The membrane assembly is connected to the housing at its edge. The material of the carrier is insensitive to cavitation, and the carrier is elastically yielding at least in the region of its edge. The electrically conductive section is electrically insulated from the terminals of the coil, and the membrane assembly is attached to the housing so that the electrically conductive section faces the flat coil.

    • A shock wave source has a coil carrier, a planar or concave coil, a membrane consisting of electrically conductive material and a foil consisting of electrically non-conductive material. The membrane is disposed between the coil and the foil so as to be held tightly therebetween but having a perimeter which is capable of substantially unrestrained movement. Upon the application of a high voltage pulse to the coil, the resulting field causes the membrane to be rapidly repelled, however, only the mechanical forces of the membrane act on the foil, with no electromagnetic forces generated by the coil acting on the foil. The resulting pressure pulse is intensified to form a shock wave pulse in a transmission medium adjacent to the foil. The substantially unrestrained perimeter of the membrane disposed between the coil and the foil permits an initial pressure pulse of short duration to be generated, which provides the further advantages of a short approach path, a small focus zone, a high focusing factor, low electrical and thermal stress on the shock wave source and a low acoustic energy output into the body of a patient receiving treatment using the shock wave source.

In the preferred and illustrated embodiment, multiple parallel magnetostrictive rods provided with coils are coupled through a plate affixed to a radiating element. The radiating element in one embodiment is an elongate hollow cylinder which is closed at both ends. Vibrations from the magnetostrictive members cause the cylinder to radially flex, creating an omnidirectional acoustic wave transmitted radially outwardly, the apparatus being positioned in a sonde for connecting an acoustic wave front through the wall of the sonde for transmission into the surrounding wellbore fluids and the adjacent formations.
