    • An underwater electric power cable in which the normal liquid impregnant, such as alkylaryl derivatives, polybutenes, polyisobutylenes, mineral oils, etc. having a specific gravity less than the specific gravity of water, is mixed with a second liquid having a specific gravity higher than that of water in proportions which will provide a mixture having a specific gravity substantially equal to that of the water in which the cable is immersed. The second liquid is miscible with the first liquid, and has low dielectric losses, a low dielectric constant, a viscosity at least as low as that of the first liquid and a boiling point of at least 150*C. A halogenated hydrocarbon, such as hexachlorobutadiene, is a preferred second liquid.

    • This disclosure relates to a novel gas barrier for use in connection with rigid conductor coaxial transmission lines. This gas barrier is characterized by a bullet shaped protrusion on which is mounted a conventional insulative disc. The protrusion fits into a mating recess which carries an electrically conductive coiled spring in electrical contact with the protrusion portion to maintain conducting continuity. A resilient O-ring is interposed between the gas barrier insulative disc and the end of the bullet receiving member for gas sealing purposes.

    • The conductor cross-section of hollow power cable is changed in accordance with varying heat conductivity conditions along the line. The hollow inner section is decreased in diameter by adding conducting material to provide increased internal heat conductivity in areas of low external heat conductivity. The outer diameter remains constant. One variation uses a smaller diameter helical conductor to support added outer wire conductors. Another type uses an inner perforated pipe of different diameters and added layers of profiled wire conductors. The transition is graded to avoid sudden changes. The hollow inner duct may be filled with a coolant such as oil.

    • A device for encircling an oil-filled underwater cable to lift a portion of the cable above the floor of the body of water upon which the cable is laid. By placing a device according to the invention around a cable, any water that infiltrates the cable is precluded from passing the lifted portion surrounded by the device. A plurality of devices of the invention at spaced locations along a cable will localize the damage due to water penetration to the cable section between two of the encircling devices. The device can suitably be formed of two detachably interconnected identical half-shells having convexly curved inner and outer surfaces, the joined half-shells forming a toroidal casing with a central hole for receiving the cable.

    • Gas (SF6) insulated bus systems having an outer grounded housing and an axial conductor wherein the outer housing section ends are supported in butt relation on an inner ring which also serves to position the insulator that supports the axial conductor; a butt weld may be formed between the housing ends over the ring. The butt weld and ring obviate the need for a friction fit of the housing ends within each other thereby reducing the scraping which creates impurities. The inner ring may have cylindrical extensions on each side spaced slightly from the inner wall of the housing to provide a tap which will receive and retain impurities that are created during construction or that may arise later - thereby reducing contamination of the insulating gas.
