    • Control circuits for breaker control switches with a time-delay function and associated methods of making and using these devices to prevent an aurora event are disclosed. An exemplary control circuit may include a signaling device configured to provide a close signal for a circuit breaker to close; a timer configured to complete a countdown after the circuit breaker is opened; and a switch configured to close the circuit breaker after the countdown is complete and when the close signal is provided by the device. This may prevent engaging a piece of equipment with the power grid when the piece of equipment is out of phase or frequency with the power grid, which often leads to significant damage or destruction of the piece of equipment. Other embodiments are described.

    • Apparatus for controlling the excitation current of a variable frequency generator (VFG) including means to create a voltage-regulated DC link using PMG power and frequency information, the latter being the image of the VFG mechanical input speed. A step-down voltage-controlled chopper is inserted between the passive rectifier stage and the excitation current control chopper. The control law of this voltage-controlled source is such that when the mechanical input speed of the VFG increases, its output (controlled DC-link voltage) decreases non-linearly, leading to DC link voltage varying from V (engine at idle) to V/2 (engine at take-off speed). The DC voltage becomes inverse-proportional to input mechanical speed.

    • A detection circuit for an alternator regulator, and method therefor. The detection circuit comprises an input circuit arranged to receive a phase signal from an alternator regulator and to output an attenuated sense signal representative of the received phase signal, a detection component operably coupled to the input circuit and arranged to receive the attenuated sense signal output by the input circuit, and a blocking capacitance operably coupled between the input circuit and the detection component and arranged to block a DC component of the attenuated sense signal. The detection component is arranged to compare the received attenuated sense signal to at least one reference voltage signal, and to output a signal representative of a frequency of the phase signal from the alternator regulator based at least partly on the comparison of the received attenuated sense signal to the at least one reference voltage signal.

    • The present invention includes a method for providing ground fault protection to a generator. The method includes determining the existing state of the generator and second, determining the updated alarm or trip conditions of a relay connected to the generator in view of the existing state of the generator. This includes estimating a ratio of the magnitude of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage to the magnitude of the 3rd harmonic terminal voltage of a generator, along with calculating the residual 3rd harmonic voltage from the estimated 3rd harmonic ratio. From this, a comparison is made between the energy of the residual voltage with a fractional energy of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage. Based on this comparison, an alarm or trip condition is signaled when the energy of the residual voltage is greater than the fractional energy of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage. The invention further includes adaptive relays and systems utilizing the adaptive relays, along with methods of producing power using the adaptive relays.
