    • Methods and apparatus for using a location of a mobile station (MS) and information about neighbor base stations (BSs) to assist network entry and initialization, scanning, and/or handover operations are provided. The location of the MS may be ascertained by determining the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the MS internally or by receiving the location from, e.g., a GPS device external to the MS. The information about neighbor BSs may be retrieved from a BS information database based on the location of the MS. The BS information database may reside within the MS, be broadcast periodically to the MS in an effort to update the MS's internal database, or be stored in the network operator's database. Knowledge of the MS's location and information about neighbor BSs may reduce the time spent during network entry, scanning, or handover, and thereby, power consumption; and may increase the bandwidth usage efficiency.

    • A method of dialing a local emergency telephone number using a mobile station. The mobile station has a database containing a plurality of Local Emergency CAII Numbers (LECAN) corresponding to a specific geographic location, the method includes displaying a list of local emergency services for the current geographic location, selecting one of the local emergency services, and retrieving a first local emergency telephone number associated with the selected local emergency service. The priority of the mobile station connecting to a mobile phone network is then upgraded from basic telephone call priority to emergency telephone call priority and a first telephone connection is made with the first local emergency telephone number using the emergency telephone call priority.

    • A method and an apparatus for determining whether an object is moved are provided. The object is disposed in a communication system having many base stations. The apparatus includes a receiver, a controller, and a warning device. During a predetermined period, the apparatus respectively receives and measures signals from each of the base stations to derive a first average value. Meanwhile, a tolerable probability value is inputted. According to the tolerable probability value and the first average value, the apparatus gets a tolerable range. Next, the apparatus continues to receive and measure signals to derive a second average value. Finally, the apparatus determines whether the object is moved in accordance with the second average value and the tolerable range. If moved, the apparatus sends out a warning signal.

    • A mobile device capable of communicating on multiple radio access networks simultaneously may concurrently operate calls of a first call type on a first network and a second call type on the second network. As the mobile device approaches the limits of the service area of the second network it may take measurements to result in the call of the second call type to be serviced by the serving cell of the first network which is serving the mobile device for the first call type. In this manner the mobile device may ensure that when it leaves the service area of the second network, the calls of the first call type and second call type are served by the same serving cell in the first network.

    • Certain embodiments provide a method for managing updates to type-length-value (TLV) parameters used in a mobile station. The method generally includes generating a TLV bitmap having a plurality of bits to indicate whether or not updates exist to a corresponding plurality of TLV parameters, generating one or more client module registration bitmaps to indicate a subset of the TLV parameters utilized by a corresponding one or more client modules running on the mobile station, updating the TLV bitmap to indicate one or more TLV parameters modified by one or more MAC management messages, identifying one or more client modules that utilize the one or more TLV parameters modified by the one or more MAC management messages, as indicated by the client module registration bitmaps, and notifying the identified client modules of the modified TLV parameters.
