    • A screening apparatus for molten plastic material flowing from an extruder comprising a housing mounted on the extruder and having a feed channel for flow of the plastic material therefrom and a slide member mounted for slidable movement in the housing with a clearance therebetween. The slide member contains replaceable screen elements adapted for being positioned in the path of flow of the plastic material flowing from the extruder to effect screening thereof. In order to seal the clearance between the slide member and the housing to prevent outflow of plastic material therefrom, a flange is mounted on the housing to surround the slide member with a gap therebetween. This permits normal free-sliding movement of the slide member in the housing. The flange contains cooling channels to permit flow of a coolant to cool plastic material in the gap and solidify the plastic material to prevent outflow of plastic material from the gap. The flange is mounted on the housing by thermal insulation which prevents cooling of the housing upon cooling of the flange.

    • An apparatus for producing multi-walled thermoplastic tubing having a corrugated wall and a substantially smooth inner wall secured to the corrugated wall, there is incorporated two sets of endless flexible belts each of which is entrained around rotatable end rolls, the outer runs of the belts of one of the sets thereof alternating with the outer runs of the other of the sets thereof, with these outer runs of the various belts serving to urge the inner wall against the corrugations of the corrugated wall while the thermoplastic material of the walls is soft thereby to secure the walls together, and with an electrically energizeable heating coil being provided for softening the thermoplastic material of the corrugated wall to ensure satisfactory securement between the walls. The apparatus also incorporates a suction chamber, a cooling chamber forwardly of the suction chamber, and a pressure chamber forwardly of the cooling chamber, the suction chamber communicating with passages in the mold blocks which constitute a tubular mold tunnel in which the tubing is formed to urge the appropriate wall against the tubular mold tunnel thereby to form the corrugated wall, cooling air flowing from the cooling chamber through these passages and exhausting through spring-loaded check valves to cool the mold blocks, and pressurized air flowing from the pressure chamber through the passages to eject the finished tubing from the tubular mold tunnel at the forward end thereof, during which the check valves are maintained closed.

    • An extrusion apparatus especially suitable for the extrusion of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene comprising an elongated die having internal heating and cooling temperature control units. The die comprises one piece straight through construction and incorporates a chamber that is positioned in longitudinal alignment with the die profile zone. The ratio of cross sectional areas of the chamber and of the die profile zone is substantially one to one. A punch forces the polyethylene through the chamber and into the profile zone of the die wherein the resin is cured and extruded to the desired shape. Internal heating passages and cooling passages are positioned within the die to form a temperature gradient wherein the temperature is greatest at a point intermediate the ends of the die. The travel of the extruded shape is retarded by an adjustable clamp exteriorly of the die.
