    • A puffer type gas-blast circuit breaker includes at least one interrupting unit mounted in a vessel filled with an arc-extinguishing gas of a unitary pressure. The interrupting unit comprises: a fixed contact; a movable contact movable toward and away from the fixed contact to be engaged with and to be disengaged from the fixed contact respectively, the movable contact having therein an axial hollow portion, wherein an arc is established between the contacts upon disengagement of the movable contact from the fixed contact; a compression chamber filled with an arc extinguishing gas; a suction chamber, wherein an arc extinguishing gas within the compression chamber is compressed and the volume of the suction chamber is enlarged upon movement of the movable contact away from the fixed contact, and wherein a pressure difference between the compression chamber and the suction chamber causes the arc extinguishing gas to be directed from the compression chamber through the axial hollow portion into the suction chamber thereby to be blown against an arc produced between the fixed contact and the movable contact; and means provided in the suction chamber for cooling an arc extinguishing gas introduced into the suction chamber to suppress a pressure rise within the suction chamber for maintaining a sufficiently large pressure difference between the compression chamber and the suction chamber, thereby shortening an arcing time and improving a breaking performance.

    • An improved compressed-gas-type of circuit-interrupter is provided having a pair of separable contacts and a cooperating nozzle structure, through which the established arc is drawn. A spring-biased sleeve-valve surrounds at least one of these separable contacts, and extends at times into the orifice throat in the closed-circuit position of the device, and also during a portion of the opening operation, thereby blocking any gas flow through the throat of the orifice device in such blocking position of the sleeve-valve.The aforesaid sleeve-valve is preferably attached by a lost-motion mechanical connection with the associated captive contact, which it surrounds, so that during an intermediate portion of the opening operation, the sleeve-valve is physically picked up on the opening stroke by the aforesaid captive contact, or, alternatively, limited in its blocking action, and withdrawn out of the orifice throat upon take-up of the lost motion, thereby unblocking the said throat and thus permitting a flow of gas therethrough.

    • A gas current blow-out switch has an electrically conducting compression cylinder, a stationary hollow power contact pin supported in the cylinder and a piston surrounding the pin and slidably received in the cylinder for compressing an arc-extinguishing gas therein. A nozzle is affixed to the cylinder for bounding one end thereof. A movable hollow power contact pin is supported coaxially with the stationary contact pin to assume open and closed positions. The switch has an electrically conducting stationary tube axially aligned with and spaced from the compression cylinder; a contact bridge slidably supported by and being in continuous electric contact with the stationary tube and the movable contact pin. The contact bridge has a closed position in which it electrically contacts the compression cylinder and an open position in which it is separated therefrom. An insulator cylinder which surrounds the compression cylinder and is slidable thereon, is coupled to the contact bridge for shifting the latter into its open position upon motion of the insulator cylinder in one direction. A carriage is shiftably arranged on a support and an externally actuated drive member is secured to the carriage and is displaceable between two limits with respect to the carriage. The drive member displaces the carriage after the drive member reaches either one of the limits. The drive member is arranged to displace the piston and the carriage is arranged to displace the insulator tube.

    • An electrical switch of the compression type wherein gas for arc extinction is compressed prior to disengagement of the contacts by movement of the driven contact itself includes a pair of contact studs arranged coaxially in end-to-end relation. One of the contact studs is positively driven, and the other contact stud which performs a follower function so as to remain temporarily in engagement with the driven contact while the gas is being compressed is mounted elastically within a movable housing structure biased to a rest position by a return spring. The housing structure is coupled to the driven contact stud by a latching mechanism such that the housing structure and follower contact stud are taken along with the driven contact stud during the gas-compressing phase of contact movement. Thereafter the latch mechanism releases thus uncoupling the spring biased housing structure and follower contact stud and permitting them to reverse direction and snap back quickly to the rest position thereby expediting disengagement of the follower contact stud from the driven contact stud as the latter continues to move in the contact separating direction, and at which time the compressed gas is released for flow into the gap formed between the ends of the contact studs.

Thus, current arcs for a range of small and medium currents may be extinguished by means of gases compressed by the driving forces generated in the neighborhood of the upper step portion of the stepped electromagnetic driving force characteristic and directed to the current arcs, while current arcs for a range of large currents may be extinguished by means of gases compressed by the driving forces generated in the neighborhood of the lower step portion of the stepped electromagnetic driving force characteristic and directed to the current arcs.
