摘要： A method of suppressing polarization-dependent loss in a signal. A constant-intensity, analog, optical signal with modulating polarization is transmitted through an optical communications link. The constant-intensity, analog, optical signal with modulating polarization includes an analog radio frequency signal impressed upon a polarization-modulated, laser signal. A polarization-dependent loss of the communications link is determined, the polarization-dependent loss inducing an induced phase shift in the constant-intensity, analog, optical signal with modulating polarization. The constant-intensity, analog, optical signal with modulating polarization is re-oriented using a polarization transformer so as to suppress the induced phase shift.

摘要： Disclosed is a transmitter that modulates a single-wavelength laser signal with multi-level amplitude modulation on each of two polarizations, with an additional multi-level inter-polarization phase modulation. In an experimental setup, four-level amplitude modulation is used on each of the two polarizations, and four-phase inter-polarization phase modulation is used. Other numbers of levels may be used, in variations of the disclosed techniques and apparatus. Also disclosed is a corresponding receiver, which includes a DSP algorithm that recovers, simultaneously, the information on the multiple intensities imprinted by the transmitter on each polarization and the information from the multi-level inter-polarization phase modulation.

摘要： Techniques for transmitting a data signal through an optical communications system. An encoder is configured to encode the data signal to generate symbols to be modulated onto an optical carrier. Each symbol encodes multiple bits of data and includes a first portion selected from a first constellation and a second portion selected from a second constellation. The first and second constellations have respective different average amplitudes. Each of the first and second constellations have a cardinality of at least two and the cardinality of the first constellation is greater than the cardinality of the second constellation. A modulator is configured to modulate a first frame of the optical signal using the first portion and modulate a second frame of the optical signal using the second portion. A selection of one frame of the optical signal to be used as the first frame encodes at least 1 bit of data.

摘要： In an optical receiver, an optical local oscillator (LO) frequency is generated. A modulated optical frequency is received at the optical receiver. An LO-signal frequency offset between the received modulated optical frequency and the optical LO frequency is determined. A determination is made as to whether the LO-signal frequency offset is in one of multiple predefined non-overlapping target windows that cover respective non-zero LO-signal frequency offsets. If it is determined that the LO-signal frequency offset is not in one of the target windows, the optical LO frequency is tuned to drive the LO-signal frequency offset toward one of the target windows to ensure the LO-signal frequency offset is non-zero.

摘要： In one aspect, the present disclosure relates to a communications system which, in one embodiment, includes a phase-correlated, orthogonally-polarized, light-stream generator (POLG) for preparing light into phase coherent light streams having defined states of polarization and spectral composition. In one embodiment, the POLG includes a light source configured to emit light having a predetermined wavelength and a polarization apparatus configured to prepare light from the light source into particular states of polarization. The POLG also includes a phase modulator configured to produce light having a plurality of wavelengths and configured to retard the phase of propagation of light with a first state of linear polarization while not retarding the phase of light with a state of linear polarization orthogonal to the first state of linear polarization when an external electric field is applied. The POLG also includes an electrical oscillator configured to periodically apply an electric field to the phase modulator.

摘要： Embodiments include a method and apparatus used for automatic bias stabilization of a DP IQM based on MZM for transmitting DP-QPSK optical data and/or DP-16QAM optical data. The apparatus simultaneously dithers DC-bias voltages of in-phase child, quadrature-phase child, and parent MZMs with three different dither patterns in time-domain which are mutually orthogonal to each other in the frequency-domain for X and Y polarization IQ modulators. Tap monitor photodiodes detect an interference term between these three dither patterns for each polarization. The interference term is sampled using an ADC in the time domain. The time-synchronous detection method may solve a set of three simultaneous linear partial differential equations with three unknowns to compute controlled DC-bias voltages to set on the respective MZM with a solution set which may iteratively converge to a unique solution, thereby biasing the child MZM in dual-polarization IQM to transmission minimum and parent MZM in quadrature transmission.

摘要： Consistent with the present disclosure, an optical communication system is provided in which data is carried over optical signals including subcarriers. The subcarriers may be modulated with the standard modulation formats noted above, but the modulation formats are selectively assigned to the subcarriers, such that some subcarriers are modulated with different standard modulation formats than others. As used herein, a “standard modulation format” is one of BPSK, and n-QAM, where n is an integer greater than one. Such n-QAM modulation formats include of 3-QAM, 4-QAM (QPSK), 8-QAM, 16-QAM, 64-QAM, 128-QAM, and 256-QAM. By selecting the number of subcarriers and the types of modulation formats employed, an optical signal with an effective SE that is between that of the standard modulation formats can be generated for transmission over a distances that more closely matches the link distance. Such custom or intermediate SE signals can be tailored to a particular optical link SNR to provide data transmission rates that are higher than the low order modulation formats that would otherwise be employed for optical signals carried by such links. As a result, more efficient data transmission can be achieved.
