    • Directory assistance provides telephone number look up services to callers based on the business or caller name as listed in a telephone directory. In the prior art, directory assistance provides a value-added service to telephone users and an expense that must be charged back to telephone callers or absorbed by telephone carriers. In enhanced directory assistance (EDA) services as described in the disclosure, EDA is further developed to deliver a keyword targeted advertising service to telephone listing owners and advertisers. The present invention provides a method and system to extend EDA services to the wireless messaging systems used by telecommunications operators. The invention further discloses methods to support both one-way and two-way communications on these devices, as well as systems to support the distributed EDA Transaction business model.

    • Methods, systems, and computer program products for silence insertion descriptor (SID) conversion are disclosed. According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a method for silence insertion descriptor (SID) conversion. The method includes receiving a wireless frame, the frame identifying a first node as a frame source and a second node as a frame destination; determining whether tandem-free operation (TFO) is applicable; responsive to a determination that TFO is applicable, determining whether the frame is a SID frame; responsive to a determination that the frame is a SID frame, determining whether the SID format used by the first node is incompatible with the SID format used by the second node; and responsive to a determination that the SID format used by the first node is incompatible with the SID format used by the second node, converting the SID frame from the SID format used by the first node to the SID format used by the second node.

In an aspect, a method includes detecting whether a loss of service has occurred, and initiating acquisition attempts during an aggressive acquisition phase if a loss of service has occurred, wherein a backoff time interval between successive acquisition attempts is constant or increased, and wherein the aggressive acquisition phase ends when service acquisition is achieved or a selected number of acquisition attempts have been performed. An apparatus includes interface logic configured to detect whether a loss of service has occurred, and processing logic configured to initiate acquisition attempts during an aggressive acquisition phase if a loss of service has occurred, wherein a backoff time interval between successive acquisition attempts is constant or increased, and wherein the aggressive acquisition phase ends when service acquisition is achieved or a selected number of acquisition attempts have been performed.

    • A technique for wireless load balancing involves providing a wireless infrastructure that creates a target band option and helps push clients toward that band. An example of a method according to the technique involves, by way of example but not limitation, responding only to probe requests on a first band when a client is detected on the first band and a second band. For example, using the techniques described herein, a platform that is both 802.11a and 802.11b/g compliant may attempt to connect preferentially to the 802.11b/g band of a wireless network, and be migrated toward the 802.11a band instead.
