    • An input buffer (16) functions to store one line of data from a scanner (12) while feeding out a previous line to a run length encoder (17). The compressed data is fed from the run length encoder (17) to an output buffer memory (19) having a fixed capacity. The compressed data is fed to the output buffer (19) intermittently while it is fed out of the output buffer (19) continuously for modulation and transmission. In response to a start signal indicating that a line of data has been stored in the input buffer (16), fill bits are fed to the output buffer (19) at high speed until a full signal is generated indicating that the output buffer (19) is full. Then, a sync signal is fed to the output buffer (19) followed by compressed data from the run length encoder (17).

    • Black and white run length encoding means first convert a binary video input signal having a raster scan format into binary black and white run length message codes which are preselected so that the initial or lead bit of each of those codes is at a given logic level. Ternary encoding means then convert the binary message codes into a series of ternary black and white run length message codes which have distinctive amplitude transitions at any intra-scan line code boundaries. To recover the video signal, the process is reversed. Moreover, a passband signal for transmitting the ternary codes from a transmitting terminal to a receiving terminal via a limited bandwidth communications channel may be provided by amplitude modulating a carrier frequency signal in accordance with the ternary codes.

    • In a transmission system in which two-level picture signal is divided into blocks, each having a predetermined number of picture elements, the pieces of signal contained in the respective blocks are converted to a predetermined number of codes, and the codes are converted to modulated signals having different levels or phase, the modulator circuit is so designed that any two modulated signals causing the shifting of the contour of picture may be converted to two signals having adjacent levels or phases, so as to minimize the degradation of the quality of the reproduced picture due to code errors caused during transmission.

    • A facsimile system for reproducing a picture having a multiplicity of lines typically including dense areas of a first type of data bounded by significant areas of a second type of data. A scanner views a particular line of the picture and provides a first stream of data having digital characteristics dependent upon the first and second types of data in the line viewed. A transmitter includes a first memory for storing the first stream of digital data and means for ascertaining the addresses in the memory which correspond to the first and last addresses of each of the dense areas of the data. The transmitter then transmits on a communication channel the first and last addresses followed by the data therebetween for each of the dense areas. A receiver connected to the channel includes a second memory for storing the transmitted data between memory addresses corresponding to the transmitted addresses so that a second stream of data similar to the first stream of data is constructed in the second memory. A printer is responsive to the second stream of data in the second memory to reproduce a line of the picture.

    • Data compression methods and the apparatus therefor are provided in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. According to one embodiment of this invention data signals are progressively combined to form successively decreasing numbers of groups of combined signals until a single group of signals is obtained. Those groups of combined signals containing nonredundant information are selectively transmitted. The selectively transmitted groups of combined signals are received and decoded whereby original data signals are regenerated. The data signals may comprise a multibit digital word or may represent video information. Encoding of the data signals removes redundant portions therefrom.

    • Shortening the marking pulses (non-background) by an amount equal to the shortest pulse which the system is intended to pass improves the performance of the three level, band-width reducing system described in the application entitled ''''Facsimile Signal Modification Reducing the Information Channel Band-Width'''' filed on Dec. 21, 1967 and bearing Ser. No. 701,511 now U.S. Pat. No. 3,588,330. As pointed out in the above referred to patent the three level signal generated in accordance with the disclosure is asymmetric with the background being represented by the outside pair of levels and the line information as the center level. This mode of operation results in a system wherein the band-width required for background-to-background transitions is halved. In such a system, however, closely spaced black to white transitions in series approach the symmetrical alternating condition and therefore are passed with varying efficiency. For transitions representing small segments of background in a field of markings, no bandwidth compression occurs. This causes a deficiency in the actual copy. Another characteristic of the original system described in the above referred to application is that modulation depth varies as the keying speed is increased above a certain point. Note that for a symmetrical three level wave the channel band-width restriction filters process a three level signal at the limit of resolution to a sine wave having a peak-to-peak value of one-half the value of the original wave.

    • A system for reducing the required bandwidth in a facsimile data transmission system or the like in which a two level digital signal, which may be derived from an analog scanning signal, is caused to be converted into and transmitted as a duo-binary signal whenever the digital signal pulse rate is greater than a predetermined minimum and transmitted as a binary signal whenever the pulse rate is lower than the predetermined rate. The system operates to produce signals which vary from an intermediate level representing black to one of two outer levels representing white as long as each black representing pulse is longer than a predetermined duration. If the black pulse is shorter than the predetermined duration the signal changes to vary between the intermediate or black level and the other lower or white level. A two level to three level converter comprising a differential amplifier and a flip-flop is shown as well as a digitally operated toggle switch for switching the level converter. In addition, a novel analog to digital converter utilizing a differential amplifier operating about an average DC slicing level is disclosed.
