    • A liquid crystal display device includes first and second display panels each including scan lines arranged in a row direction, signal lines arranged in a column direction, and pixels arranged in a matrix at intersections of the first scan lines and the first signal lines. The first display panel and the second display panel are set in a non-display mode and in a display mode, respectively. Shift registers and buffer circuits connected to respective groups of scan lines sequentially drive respective group of scan lines in the first display panel during a vertical blanking time of the second display panel. The pixels of the first display panel are driven to refresh by writing an image signal for a black display in the first display panel.

    • A liquid crystal display device includes an array substrate, a counter substrate and a liquid crystal layer having liquid crystal molecules interposed therebetween. The liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a direction normal to a surface of the substrates under a condition where no electrical voltage is supplied between a picture electrode and a counter electrode. An alignment control device is provided at the counter substrate and configured to control the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules under a condition where an electric field is applied between the picture electrode and the counter electrode. A scanning line crossing a pixel is divided into first and second segments. The array substrate includes a connecting element to connect the first and second segments opposite the alignment control device.

    • A liquid crystal display device having a non-rectangular display panel includes an active area which is defined by a peripheral shield layer. A plurality of pixels are formed in the active area in a matrix and typically each pixel includes a plurality of sub-pixels to display respective different colors. The pixels include a first pixel arranged in the peripheral region of the active area and a second pixel arranged at an inner region. A part of the first pixel located in a peripheral region of the active area is covered with the peripheral shield layer. The thickness of the color filter layer arranged in the first pixel where the peripheral shield layer overlaps with the first pixel is smaller than that of a same color filter arranged in the second pixel having a larger effective display area than that of the first pixel area.
