    • The invention provides the ability to interactively select and configure a product among a set of related products based on availability and compatibility of features and options. It does not impose an order in the selection of products, features or options; only valid selections can be made at any time. To create an electronic representation of the product information to achieve the above goal, the invention provides a framework for defining a systems by defining the components of the system using elements contained in a parts catalog and defining relationships between the components of a system. A configuration system validates a configuration using the system definition, the current state of the configuration and user input.

    • Normalized data models are programmatically generated from a combination of product configuration model data, product configuration engine runtime validation, normalized data mappings, and settings files declaring the scope of model content. A master model generation process effectively transforms conventional configuration data into normalized configuration data. The normalized configuration data allows a user to, for example, conduct comparative product configurations. In one embodiment, a normalized model generation process generates normalized data model representing attributes and normalized features of a product. In one embodiment, the normalized configuration data model is then added to in-memory data structures used during runtime contextual configuration analysis, thus reducing the total number of data items preserved as efficiencies result from eliminating duplication and effective use of search structures. In-memory representation of the normalized configuration data model can then be serialized to disk as a file to be loaded for runtime use in a deployment.

    • A high-density information presentation is provided on a space-constrained display device by associating individual display indications with user-definable states. For example, using a portion of a space-constrained display of a mobile phone, pager personal digital assistant, or other portable device, one or more external states may be presented as a simple graphical or character indication that corresponds, in a user-defined way, to the external state or states. In general, implementations allow monitoring and access of a large amount of data on a space-constrained display device. Usability problems associated with traditional systems that split data access and navigation over paged small screens are generally avoided.

    • An application's XML parser requiring XML files conforming to a very simple DTD requires a user to create a verbose and very redundant XML input file. The verbose XML file is usually prone to errors if created by a novice user, or an entity not involved in the initial creation of the application and its parser. Thus, the present invention creates an input XML file conforming to the simple DTD from a grammar rich XML file provided by the user. The grammar rich XML file requires a complex DTD for transformation. The complex DTD may also be prone to error if created by the user, therefore, the complex DTD file is automatically created from a schema definition provided by the user, or an agency of the user. The user or an agent of the user defines a schema for the desired grammar level, and then through a series of XSL transformations, the complex DTD file is created. Also, a stylesheet used for transforming the user's grammar rich XML file is automatically created. The grammar rich XML file provided by the user conforms to the automatically created complex DTD file. Thus, the grammar used in defining the user interface to an application is extensible without any requirement to enrich and recompile the application's XML parser.

    • A data processing system generates recommendations for on-line shopping by scoring recommendations matching the customer's cart contents using by assessing and ranking each candidate recommendation by the expected incremental margin associated with the recommendation being issued (as compared to the expected margin associated with the recommendation not being issued) by taking into consideration historical associations, knowledge of the layout of the site, the complexity of the product being sold, the user's session behavior, the quality of the selling point messages, product life cycle, substitutability, demographics and/or other considerations relating to the customer purchase environment. In an illustrative implementation, scoring inputs for each candidate recommendation (such as relevance, exposure, clarity and/or pitch strength) are included in a probabilistic framework (such as a Bayesian network) to score the effectiveness of the candidate recommendation and/or associated selling point messages by comparing a recommendation outcome (e.g., purchase likelihood or expected margin resulting from a given recommendation) against a non-recommendation outcome (e.g., the purchase likelihood or expected margin if no recommendation is issued). In addition, a probabilistic framework may also be used to select a selling point message for inclusion with a selected candidate recommendation by assessing the relative strength of the selling point messages by factoring in a user profile match factor (e.g., the relative likelihood that the customer matches the various user case profiles).
