    • A feed-forward equalizer can be used in the host optical receiver to perform at least some of the desired signal processing in the optical domain, e.g., prior to coherently detecting and digitizing the received optical signal(s). In some embodiments, the signal processing implemented in the feed-forward equalizer can at least partially compensate the adverse effects of chromatic dispersion, polarization-mode dispersion, and/or spatial-mode mixing/crosstalk imparted on the received optical signal(s) in the optical transport link. This reduces the signal-processing load of and the signal-processing requirements to the receiver's electrical DSP.

    • A point-of-care seed stranding device for automating assembly of brachytherapy seed strands for implantation in patients. The device includes a number of features to reduce the potential for mistakes by the user, as well as to reduce the potential for damaging the radioactive seeds during the stranding process. Tactile feedback may be provided to prevent exertion of too much force in the packing step of the stranding process, as well as to indicate that the seed and/or strand cartridges are empty and need to be replaced. The device may also include a mechanism for holding seeds or spacers in place to allow automated packing of seeds or spacers having corresponding geometries. The device may also be provided with a seed counter which can be employed to preset the number of seeds in a strand and which disables the device from dispensing or packing additional seeds once the preset number of seeds has been packed into the strand. Also, methods for automated assembly of seed strands including the steps of setting the number of seeds, dispensing seeds and spacers, packing seeds and spacers and transferring assembled strands to another device.

    • An optical transport system that transmits data using relatively short FEC-encoded data frames. The corresponding modulated optical signals are decoded at an optical receiver using frame-based maximum likelihood sequence estimation that relies on data redundancy present in each FEC-encoded data frame for the determination of its source bits. In some embodiments, the modulated optical signals carrying the FEC-encoded data frames are generated using a polarization-division-multiplexed constellation. The FEC-coding rate and frame length can be adjusted without changing the constellation, which advantageously enables the optical transport system to dynamically adapt its transmission format to the changing link conditions in a manner that results in better overall receiver sensitivity than that achieved with comparable bit-rate-adaptation methods that rely on a constellation change rather than on a change of the FEC-coding rate.

    • An analysis technique for (Doherty) amplifiers having a main amplifier branch and at least one peak amplifier branch. For a given input power level and assumed amplifier impedance levels, an output power level and phase response are obtained for each active device using appropriate load-pull data based on the impedance levels. The performance of the amplifier is analyzed based on the impedance levels, output power levels, and phase responses to generate updated impedance levels. The analysis is repeated until the updated impedance levels converge on steady state values. The analysis can be repeated for different input power levels. Main and peak output matching networks for the amplifier can be designed by iteratively adjusting impedance levels for the networks using appropriate load-pull contours. For the design and analysis phases, the load-pull contours include Class-AB data for the main amplifier device and Class-C data for the peak amplifier device.

    • In one embodiment, a server-implemented method for providing an image file. The server receives a uniform resource locator (URL) containing identification of a requested image file for display within the browser of a user, the URL including criteria specified by one or more parameters relating to the size and/or format of the image file to provide. The server determines whether a cached version of the requested image file satisfying the one or more criteria exists. If so, then the server provides the cached version of the requested image file for display within the browser of the user. If not, then the server (i) generates a processed image file by modifying a stored version of the requested image file based on the one or more criteria; (ii) stores a cached version of the processed image file; and (iii) provides the processed image file for display within the browser of the user.
