    • A sheet supply apparatus includes a sheet supply member for supplying printing sheets, a separating member movably situated adjacent to the sheet supply member, a pressing member movably situated adjacent to the separating member, an urging device disposed near the pressing member for urging the pressing member toward the separating member so that the separating member contacts the sheet supply member, and an adjusting device connected to the urging device for adjusting an urging force exerted on the pressing member by the urging device. The adjusting device includes a rotationally operating portion and a rotationally adjusting portion connected to the rotationally operating portion. The rotationally adjusting portion is situated adjacent to the pressing member and the urging member to adjust the urging force while being operated by the rotationally operating portion.

    • An apparatus and method are provided for controlling the presentation of articles to the singulation head of a system for singulating a stack of edge-mounted articles, for example mixed mail, which mechanism senses the instantaneous pressure at which the lead article of the stack is pressed against the singulation head. A feedback control may be provided responsive to a difference between detected instantaneous pressure and a desired target pressure for controlling at least one drive member in a manner so as to reduce such difference. Where there is a pick window of instantaneous pressure at which singulation can be effectively performed, a control may also be provided to inhibit operation of the singulation head when the instantaneous pressure is outside the pick window. Two vertically spaced pressure sensors may be provided on the singulation head to detect the angle at which the lead article is presented to the head and controls may be provided for the drive mechanism(s) to reduce the difference between the instantaneous angle detected and an optimum angle for singulation and/or to inhibit operation of the singulation head when the instantaneous angle is outside of a range where singulation may be effectively performed. The sensor preferably includes a lever extending from the surface of the singulation head which is moved by a distance dependant on the pressure applied thereto. A servo motor may be connected to the lever to apply a bias pressure thereto which bias pressure is determined by a control signal applied to the motor. The sensor may also include a position encoder generating an output indicative of lever position.

    • The invention relates to a sheet-extracting device with a cassette for receiving a stack of sheets, and to a method of controlling the pressing force of the stack of sheets against the extracting device. The latter has extracting rollers (16) which are arranged on a floating shaft (34). For its part, the floating shaft (34) is centrally connected in a rationally fixed manner to a drive shaft (18) passing through it. The drive shaft (18) is mounted, by one end (20), in a frame-mounted bearing (21) and, by its other end (62), in a displaceable bearing (64). Acting on the bearing (64) is a force sensor (70, 74, 76) which is intended for determining the pressing force of the stack of sheets (12) against the extracting rollers (16). The pressing force is controlled such that it always moves within a narrow middle range between a minimum and a maximum possible value.
