    • The invention relates to a cellular digital mobile radio system including base stations (B.sub.m, B.sub.n) and mobile stations (MS.sub.1, MS.sub.2) with transmitters and receivers. The invention also relates to a method of transmitting message information digitally between mobile and base stations in such a system. In accordance with the invention, at least two base station transmitters (B.sub.ma, B.sub.mb, B.sub.na, B.sub.nb) at a given transmitting distance from each other are assigned to each of certain cells (C.sub.m, C.sub.n) within a restricted geographical area. The base station transmitters which are assigned to the same cell transmit digitally modulated radio signals within the same frequency range at least partially simultaneously to the mobile stations of the cell. The radio signals from different base station transmitters associated with the same cell are digitally modulated with the same message information to the mobile stations in the cell. Different base station transmitters (9A, 9B) preferably transmit the digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station with a given mutual transmission time shift. Here, the transmission time shift is selected individually for each mobile station, such that corresponding digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station from different base station transmitters arrive practically simultaneously at the mobile station.

    • A method for synchronizing message transmissions in a simulcast transmitter system is described. A master controller couples to a plurality of regional controllers for enabling message transmissions and for initiating delay measurement signal transmissions in each of a plurality of regions. The master controller generates a first delay measurement signal which is transmitted from a selected one of a plurality of regional transmitters operating within a first transmission region. The regional controller within the first transmission region measures the propagation delay of the selected one of the plurality of regional transmitters within the first transmission region. The master controller next generates a second delay measurement signal which is transmitted from a selected one of the plurality of regional transmitters operating within a second transmission region adjacent to the first transmission region. The regional controller within the first transmission region measures the propagation delay of the selected one of the plurality of regional transmitters within the second transmission region. The intra-regional differential propagation delay is computed from the measurements of the propagation delays measured from the first and second transmission regions. The additional transmission delay is computed for each of the regional transmitters within the first and second transmission regions, and the transmission delays for each regional transmitter are adjusted to equalize the intra-regional differential transmission delays between the first and second transmission regions.

    • A simulcast transmitter apparatus having automatic synchronization capability is disclosed which utilizes a signal readily available from any one of a number of available master timing sources to maintain a constant, uniform time delay to the transmitter via its interconnect link, even though the time delay corresponding to this interconnect link is susceptible to variation. Each interconnect link may consist of a phone line or other radio link which exhibits a relatively fixed, but unstable, delay. Each base station includes at least a transmitter and an adaptive-delay device which operates as a remotely-adjustable delay network upon receipt of a resync signal from a central controller to readjust and automatically maintain a uniform amount of time delay to each transmitter in the base stations. A master timing signal receiver, such as a suitable radio navigation receiver, is coupled to a suitable fixed delay network and provides the reference sync signal for each remotely-sited base station throughout the designated geographical area. This transmitter is therefore able to be compensated for varying amounts of delay caused by utilizing alternate links which may be necessary to maintain system reliability while overcoming inclement weather, interference, or other equipment difficulties.

    • A simulcast transmission system is provided where a reference signal transmitted from a central station is utilized to phase-lock transmitters located at remote stations. The remote stations include a receiver for receiving the transmitted reference signal and a signal conditioner for conditioning the received reference signal for application to the transmitters. The transmitters include a phase-locked loop which may be followed by a multiplier for providing transmitter signals of predetermined frequencies. All the transmitters at the remote stations are phase locked to the reference signal transmitted from the central station. In the event that the reference signal transmitted by the central station is interrupted, the signal conditioner of the remote stations will operate in an open-loop fashion to provide the conditioned reference signal during the interruption. After the interruption has cleared, the signal conditioner is automatically phase synchronized to the reference signal and closed-loop operation is resumed.
