    • A correlator used for spread spectrum communications which reduces consumed power. A signal extraction circuit (6) is provided for directly extracting phase information from an input signal which expresses two values of code data by each phase of a plurality of cycles. A signal transferring circuit (1) is connected to the signal extraction circuit (6) for transferring the phase information to a multiplying circuit (2) comprised of a plurality of multipliers. Signals in each cell of the signal transferring circuit (1) are multiplied by fixed coefficients within the multiplying circuit (2) and supplied to an adding circuit (3) for determination of a correlation peak value.

    • A multipath-combining subsystem for receiving a spread-spectrum signal arriving from a plurality of paths. A header-matched filter detects each match, within each path, of a header-chip-sequence signal with a first impulse response and outputs a header-detection signal having a header amplitude and a respective chip location. A data-matched filter detects at the respective chip location of each header-detection signal, a respective data-chip-sequence signal and outputs a data-detection signal having a data amplitude. A combiner multiplies the header amplitude of each header-detection signal and the data amplitude of the respective data symbol to generate a plurality of weighted elements for each data symbol. The combiner then adds the plurality of weighted elements for each data symbol as a sum signal of the respective data symbol.

    • A spread spectrum receiver for demodulating a CPM spread spectrum signal receives burst comprising a preamble and a data message that have been transmitted by M-ary encoding of a data signal into a single chip stream, dividing the chip stream into I and Q signal streams, independently modulating the I and Q signal streams, and superposing the resultants for transmission. The receiver detects the preamble using a non-coherent parallel correlator, and from the preamble correlation peak generates a series of integration periods for serial non-coherent correlation. A bank of non-coherent, serial correlators operate in parallel to recover the spread spectrum encoded information. For each of M spread spectrum codes, the receiver simultaneously attempts to correlate the non-preamble portion of the received spread spectrum signal by separating, the received signal into real and imaginary parts, correlating both real and imaginary parts for I and Q sequences, and combining the real I, real Q, imaginary I, and imaginary Q correlation signals into a unified correlation signal. The maximum of the unified correlation signals from the non-coherent, serial correlators dictates the content of the data stream for each integration period. The local clock reference signal in the receiver need not be frequency or phase matched with the clock of the transmitter in order to carry out the integration and recovery of the data stream.

    • A method for configuring the receiver with an IF delay value that indicates the timing of symbol transitions in a received signal processed by the receiver. The receiver recovers a timing that has the same period as the symbol period, but which is out of phase with the received symbols. The received symbols are members of a constellation with elements that have purely I or purely Q components. A symbol-quality signal is generated by constructing the quantity .vertline..vertline.I.vertline.-.vertline.Q.vertline..vertline.. This quantity is a maximum when the detected symbols are aligned with the expected points in the symbol constellation, and decreases if the detected symbols are rotated away from these constellation points. The method determines an optimal delay value by which the symbol clock should be shifted from the recovered timing by using the symbol-quality signal to evaluate test delays and to successively refine them until the optimal delay value is found.

    • The present invention describes a method and apparatus for improving the autocorrelation performance in spread spectrum radar and communications systems by using a tri-state digital correlator to demodulate the received biphase modulated waveform. The tri-state correlator (100) includes a multiplexer (112) having a code input for receiving a tri-state code sequence, and three inputs each for receiving a sequence of data words including a first input for receiving a digitized signal data word, a second input for receiving an inverted digitized signal data word, and a third input for receiving a zero data word. The multiplexer includes an output and a means for producing a sequence of data words at the output, said means presenting at the output exactly one of the three data words appearing at either the first, second, or third input depending on which of the three code states appears at the code input. The present invention also describes the manner in which the tri-state code sequence is constructed from a binary code sequence to effect a significant improvement in the autocorrelation performance.
