    • An access node receives a device beacon transmitted from a wireless communication device in accordance with a system timing of a wireless wide area network (WWAN). When transmitted within a WWAN uplink channel, the device beacon is mapped to designated beacon channels within the time-frequency space of the uplink WWAN channel assignment. In response to the reception of the device beacon, communications between the wireless communication device and the access node are established. In one example, the access node is a femtocell base station. In another example, the access node is a wireless local area network (WLAN) access point.

    • Briefly, one way to minimize time and frequency uncertainties when synchronizing between a transmitter and a receiver is to use a position determining method such as global positioning system (GPS) to determine position and velocity. If position can be determined the delay between the transmitter and receiver can be estimated. Additionally, position information can be used to determine the probability that the signal received will be a reflected signal. If the transmitter and receiver are located in an area with obstructions between them then it is more likely that a signal received will be a reflected signal. If it is determined that it is likely that the signal received will be a reflected signal then the receiver can attempt to acquire the transmitted signal over a wider range of propagation delay possibilities. Additionally, another uncertainty that complicates synchronization is uncertainty regarding frequency. One cause for frequency uncertainty is Doppler shift due to movement of the transmitter or receiver. Using a position determining method such as GPS to determine velocity allows the receiver to estimate the Doppler frequency shift and adjust for it.

    • An originating transceiver node provides wireless service to a wireless communication device that is transmitting uplink signals within originating uplink time periods assigned to the originating transceiver node. A target transceiver node is assigned target uplink time periods for uplink communication from wireless communication devices receiving wireless service from the target transceiver node where the target uplink time periods are different from the originating uplink time periods. The target transceiver node monitors the originating uplink time periods and transmits a message if an uplink signal is received within an originating uplink time slot. In some circumstances, the target transceiver node sends the message only if a determination is made that the wireless communication device transmitting the uplink signal has a proximity to the target transceiver node that is less than a threshold.

    • A wireless access point manages wireless service to a multi-mode wireless communication device based on a wireless wide area network (WWAN) signal. The access point transmits a device proximity message to the WWAN based on the proximity of the multi-mode wireless communication device to the access point where the proximity is at least partially based on a WWAN signal. The device proximity message may indicate a request to perform an alternate network acquisition procedure to establish wireless service from an alternate network different than a current network providing service to the multi-mode wireless communication device. Where the current network is WWAN, and the WWAN signal is a WWAN reverse link signal transmitted by the communication device and received at the access point, the access point determines the proximity of the communication device to the access point at least partially based on the WWAN reverse link signal. The access point determines whether to provide WLAN service to the multi-mode wireless communication device at least partially on a characteristic of the WWAN signal such as, for example, a power level or signal quality. The alternate network acquisition procedure may include an instruction from the WWAN to the multi-mode wireless communication device to search for an alternate network, to search for the access point, and/or to acquire an alternate network.
