    • A solenoid valve plunger 23 has a conical tip portion 25 which is insertable into a valve seat 5 to close it, a cylindrical portion 24 slidable within a magnetic plate 2, and an annular raised portion 26 for deflecting a fluid flow between the conical portion of the plunger and the valve opening away from the magnetic plate. Alternatively, the plunger may have a nonmagnetic conical tip portion 32 which is insertable into the valve opening to close it, and a partially nonmagnetic cylindrical portion slidable within the magnetic plate, the magnetic plate having a nonmagnetic guide portion 35. Both constructions avoid the impeding accumulation of magnetic particles at the plunger base.

    • A combination spring and washer device which facilitates pin-type cantilever mounting of a solenoid valve having a tubular plastic body on a transmission control valve body. The plastic body of the solenoid valve has a relatively heavy coil at a coil end thereof and is plugged into a pressure bore in the control valve body so that the coil is supported in cantilever beam fashion. A minimum wall thickness flux gap portion of the plastic body is located between the control valve body and the coil end of the plastic body. The spring and washer device is snap fitted over the flux gap portion and includes a flat washer portion which bears against a flange on the plastic body on one side of the flux gap portion. The spring and washer device further includes a pair of integral spring arms which bear against the coil body which is disposed on the other side of the flux gap portion so that the flux gap portion is preloaded in tension. The magnitude of the preload is calculated to balance the dynamic beam bending forces which occur during normal vehicle operation due to the concentration of the mass of the coil at the coil end of the plastic body.

    • A solenoid actuated fluid control valve comprises a porting member including a port and a conical valve seat circumscribing the port, and a relatively movable port closing valve element such as a needle valve element including a resilient conical tip. The valve seat and tip are correspondingly tapered and a small annular bead is provided on the resilient tip which provides for initial and preferably total sealing of the valve. Also provided is a suitable stop such as a shoulder on the needle valve element body adjacent the resilient conical tip thereon which engages an opposed surface on the porting member to prevent overcompression of the resilient conical tip and preferably to limit sealing contact to the area of the sealing bead.
