    • A time indicating traffic light that includes a vertically-oriented and rectangular-parallelepiped-shaped housing, a circular-shaped "stop" indicator light, a circular-shaped "caution" indicator light, seven rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights, and a time indicating display. The circular-shaped "stop" indicator light, the circular-shaped "caution" indicator light, and the seven rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights are disposed in the vertically-oriented and rectangular-parallelepiped-shaped housing. The seven rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights have a pair of parallel, elongated, spaced-apart, vertically-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights, and five adjacent, slightly vertically spaced-apart, horizontally-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" lights. The five adjacent, slightly vertically spaced-apart, horizontally-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" lights extinguish progressively upwardly towards the circular-shaped "caution" indicator light at a predetermined rate determined by a timer while the pair of parallel, elongated, spaced-apart, vertically-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights remain illuminated when at least one light of the five adjacent, slightly vertically spaced-apart, horizontally-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" lights is illuminated. The time indicating display is disposed on the vertically-oriented and rectangular-parallelepiped-shaped housing and provides a visible display of the time of illumination of the seven rectangular-shaped "go" indicator lights, so that an approaching vehicle can determine when the circular-shaped "caution" indicator light will be illuminated by dividing the time of illumination on the time indicating display by the number of lights of the five adjacent, slightly vertically spaced-apart, horizontally-oriented, and rectangular-shaped "go" lights extinguished and thereby prevent sudden acceleration followed by a sudden stop.

    • A platoon running control system which is able to recognize the position of a vehicle within a platoon and to appropriately respond to a change, for example, when another vehicle leaving the platoon. If the vehicle is not in a platoon running mode, a communication control ECU assigns an ID=1 to the vehicle, and a vehicle control ECU operates the vehicle in an auto-drive mode based on a signal such as from a magnetic sensor or a CCD camera. During platoon-running mode, a light receiver receives data including ID information from a preceding vehicle, and the controlled vehicle is assigned an ID according to a rule in which the ID of the vehicle=ID of the preceding vehicle+1. Then, the vehicle starts platoon running using data from the preceding vehicle. When the system received information that the preceding vehicle will leave the platoon, platoon-leaving data is transmitted to the vehicle, which then transmits such data to the following vehicle. The vehicle changes its ID to 1 when it does not receive any more data from the preceding vehicle. In a case where its ID has been changed to 1 from 3 or greater, the vehicle accelerates so as to re-form the platoon.

    • A system for controlling traffic at a street intersection includes an intersection signal light assembly with a flashing green signal light unit, in addition to the usual red, yellow and green signal light units. A signal controller is provided for the intersection signal light assembly and actuates the flashing green signal light unit during flashing green intervals that precede green intervals in which the green signal light unit of the intersection signal light assembly is actuated. A pre-intersection signal light assembly is located in proximity to a reaction point associated with an approach lane to the intersection. The distance that the reaction point is located from the intersection is determined by considering the reaction time of a driver and the stopping distance of a vehicle in which the vehicle could be safely brought to a stop at the intersection. The pre-intersection signal light assembly is for providing a reference point beyond which a driver should clear the intersection if the flashing green interval commences and before which the driver should stop upon commencement of the flashing green interval. A method of controlling traffic with the traffic control system is also disclosed.

    • the present invention discloses a method and apparatus for enabling motorists to anticipate the change of a traffic signal from green to red in sufficient time to enable the motorist to either stop or proceed through the intersection by altering his or her speed for both fuel conservation and safety purposes. The control system of the present invention includes a timer wherein timing signals are used to control the on/off condition of the red, amber, and green lights of a traffic light signal apparatus, as indicated below. The green light begins its cycle for a first relatively long period of time. At some relatively short period of time prior to the end of the green light's cycle, the ambler light comes "on" in a stedy state or blinking condition simultaneously with the green. This enables motorists to anticipate the impending change of the light from green-to-amber-to-red in order that they can properly gauge their speed for both safety and fuel conservation purposes. After a relatively short period of time, the green light goes "off" and the amber continues "on, " normally as a conventional steady state amber light. At the end of the amber light cycle, the signal switches to red for a relatively long period of time before turinging the red "off" and the green "on" to begin the cycle anew.
