By utilizing digital and integrated circuit technology, prior, essentially linear, control apparatus, which are relatively unreliable, expensive and slow, need not be used.

    • The operation of a first motor and a second motor generates first and second frequency signals, respectively, which are fed to a phase lock loop (59) for phase comparison. A tri-level detection circuit (61) develops an output signal in response to the phase relationship between the first and second frequency signals. The first frequency signal is converted to a voltage signal by a converter (63) which is fed to an amplifier (64). A feedback circuit (66) is connected across the amplifier and includes several selectable levels of impedance. A switching network (62) responds to the output signal of the detection circuit (61), and thereby in response to the phase relationship between the first and second frequency signals, to connect one of the impedance levels of the feedback circuit (66) across the amplifier circuit (64). The amplified voltage signal is fed to a controller within a motor drive (72) for the second motor to control the speed of the second motor and insure in-phase operation thereof with the first motor.

    • A tape drive including a drive motor; a take-up reel driven thereby; and a motor speed control system controlling the angular velocity of the drive motor for maintaining a substantially constant linear velocity of the tape as it is wound on the take-up reel, said control system comprising: a turns-counter counting the turns of tape as each is applied to the take-up reel; a presettable register; presetting means for presetting a predetermined number in said register at the beginning of a tape drive operation when the take-up reel is empty of tape; means for decrementing the register at a rate, with respect to the rate of application of turns onto the take-up reel, which is initially large during the application of a first predetermined number of turns, and which is subsequently reduced during the application of subsequent turns, to cause the contents of the presettable register to decrease in a non-linear manner with respect to the rate of increase in the number of turns applied to the take-up reel to approximate the non-linear relationship between the angular velocity of the drive motor and the diameter of tape on the take-up reel required to produce a substantially constant linear tape velocity; and motor control means controlling the angular velocity of the drive motor in accordance with the contents of the presettable register.

    • A speed control system for use in a continuous strip manufacturing apparatus such as a continuous casting and rolling apparatus having a plurality of work means including roll stands through which metal rod or other elongate material is continuously moved. The control system includes a function generator providing a speed control signal to the speed regulator means of one roll stand which is linearly proportional to the speed of the preceding work means and which is also linearly proportional to the sum of an operator selected arbitrary signal voltage proportional to a desired speed ratio of the one roll stand to the preceding work means and a looper signal voltage proportional to the variation from a preselected position of the position of a loop of elongate material formed between the one roll stand and the preceding work means. The control system thus acts to maintain a desired proper relation between the speeds of the one roll stand and the preceding work means while providing compensating variations in the speed of the one roll stand with variations in the position of the loop of elongate material from a preselected position.

    • An improved technique is disclosed for adjusting the crankshaft angle of each of a plurality of synchronized tandem-coupled presses with respect to a reference shaft angle. At the start of adjustment, a plurality of first motors that synchronously drive the successive crankshafts during normal press operation are disengaged from the crankshafts and maintained operative with undiminished speed. A plurality of second motors operative at a speed slightly greater than the speed of the reference shaft are thereafter enabled when the angular phase of each crankshaft relative to that of the reference shaft is within a prescribed angular range. Such range is established by means of a synchro-driven control system coupled to the reference shaft and to the crankshaft when the first motor is disengaged from the crankshaft. Once the required angular adjustment is completed, the rotating first motor may be reengaged to the crankshaft to restore normal press operation.
