    • The present invention provides an audio source selection process for a conference bridge. The conference bridge receives multiple audio sources and selects at least one of the audio sources based on the relative signal levels associated with the audio signal at each of the audio sources. The audio signals associated with the selected source are delivered to conference participants via one or more audio outputs. The conference bridge will repeatedly employ a selection process to select an audio source based on signal level measurements for the audio signals of the audio sources. During the selection process, the influence of a selected audio source relative to the other unselected audio sources is reduced, after the selected audio source has remained selected for more than a first time period.

    • The present invention allows incoming calls to be processed based on calendar information obtained from an electronic calendar of a called party. When an incoming call intended for the called party is received, a service node may retrieve the calendar information for the called party and process the call based on the calendar information. The call processing may result in forwarding the call or invoking an interactive voice response system (IVR) by forwarding the call to the IVR, and providing instructions based on the calendar information to the IVR. The IVR may then provide messages based on the calendar information to the caller as well as provide options to the caller, retrieve responses from the caller, and instruct the service node to process the call based on the responses. The IVR may also allow the caller to schedule an appointment on the electronic calendar of the called party.

    • A method and apparatus for managing communication between participants in a virtual environment enables the participants to elect to automatically connect with each other via a preferred communication mechanism, manually connect with each other, or choose not to connect with each other. The connection may be point-to-point between two participants or may include multiple participants. Establishment of a connection, or the ability to establish a connection, may be based on the proximity of the participants, or the Avatars representing the participants, in the virtual environment. Once the connection is established, the connection may be managed so that the connection is maintained while the Avatars remain proximate each other and is automatically severed once the Avatars move away from each other. Environmental noise and other audio aspects may be included in the connection to simulate a real-world conversation.

    • The present invention relates to searching content databases and ranking the search results of the searches based, at least in part, on affinity criteria for a particular user. Notably, a given user will communicate through various means with contacts. The identities of some, if not all, of the contacts with which the user communicates are used to create an affinity list. For each contact in the user's affinity list, a record of the items that have been accessed by that user is maintained as access history information. Each contact may have access history information, and the collection of the access history information for some or all of the contacts in the user's affinity list is generally referred to as affinity criteria. When the user initiates a search for items in contact databases, items returned from the search are ranked based, at least in part, on the affinity criteria.

    • A mobile terminal is anchored in a control subsystem, which will function as the mobile terminal's home service subsystem. Call signaling for an incoming call is routed to the control subsystem, which will provide call processing. The call processing may include determining how to route the call to the mobile terminal. Call signaling may be provided to the mobile terminal via the packet subsystem while the bearer path for the incoming call may be established to the mobile terminal though either the circuit-switched subsystem or the packet subsystem. When the mobile terminal is capable of supporting local wireless communications, the bearer paths for incoming calls may be provided via a local wireless subsystem. The subsystem chosen for the bearer path may be based on whether there is sufficient bandwidth to support the bearer path over an available packet-based connection.

    • The present invention provides a technique for broadcasters to deliver advertising messages in a more effective way to digital media recorder users, wherein the digital media recorders may be configured to record various types of audio or video programs having advertisements therein. When playback of a recorded program is requested, the digital media recorder will play at least one alternate advertisement prior to beginning playback of the recorded program. After the alternate advertisements are played, the recorded media content is played without the original advertisements. As such, the original advertisements in the recorded program are skipped during playback in exchange for presenting one or more alternate advertisements prior to beginning playback of the recorded program.
