    • Reliable and efficient search windows are provided by allowing the adaptation of the code search window to be dependent on inaccuracy measures of relations between a cellular frame time and a satellite reference time. This inaccuracy is calculated in a positioning node (21) of the cellular communications system (1), preferably by filtering of measurements received from user equipments. Linear trend Kalman filtering followed by post processing of estimation errors is presently preferred. In order to ensure non-ambiguous interpretation of the received time stamps of received satellite signals (55) provided by user equipments (10), a pseudo propagation delay is computed in both the user equipment (10) and the positioning node (21) based on GPS acquisition assistance data. The GPS time stamp is then defined referring to the determined pseudo propagation delay. In a preferred embodiment, the pseudo propagation delay is assured to be situated within a pre-determined time interval.

    • The invention relates to satellite-based positioning of mobile terminals. Positioning with correction for errors in parameters measured at the mobile terminal is provided. The terminal location is first calculated (S2; S4′) without error correction or with partial error correction. Hereby, a set of nonlinear equations with the UE location and the UE clock bias and possibly the transmission time offset as unknowns are defined, linearized and solved for the mobile terminal location. The quality of the result is determined and compared to a predetermined criterion (S3; S5). If the quality criterion is not fulfilled, the location of the mobile terminal is recalculated with additional error correction (S4, S4′; S6). The proposed method can involve correction for errors in a parameter for time of signal reception, or in a pseudorange parameter, or both. The error correction can be stepwise.

    • In a cellular communications network, additional control signals comprising virtual base station identification data are distributed in the radio system from well defined locations by e.g. transmitters. Since there is a connection between each virtual base station identification data and the location from where it is transmitted, a mobile terminal can use the information for improving its position estimation according to conventional procedures. No modifications of the mobile terminals are therefore necessary. The mobile terminal is not able to connect to the communications system using the virtual base station identification data, since this data only is intended for position estimating purposes. In such a way, the devices for providing the additional information necessary for the improved position estimation can be made very simple and inexpensive.

    • In a mobile telecommunications network, a mobile station (MS) is configured to generate and uplink transmit position measuring data prior to and/or during a call connection, without noticeably interrupting the user or degrading the quality of service provided. Position measuring data can be uplink transmitted over an idle traffic channel during a call set up operation for a brief moment while the call connection is being completed. Position measuring data can also be uplink transmitted during a call by selectively stealing data positions or burst positions in the uplink signal. The position measuring data is received by a plurality of base stations and uplink signal characteristics are measured and collected. The measured uplink signal characteristic data from several base stations is then used to determine a current approximate geographical location of the mobile station.
