    • The subject invention is a tube welding apparatus for the welding of small tubes, such as those one-sixteenth of an inch to one-half inch in diameter. The tube welding apparatus includes a drive housing to which is supplied inert gas, cooling water and electricity. Different torch housings are to be mountable in a removably disengaged manner on the drive housing with only a single torch housing being mounted to the drive housing at any given time. The torch housing includes a rotor gear within which is mounted the welding electrode with this rotor gear to be rotatably driven about the tube that is to be welded. Also mounted within the torch housing is an electrical brush which is to be in engagement with the rotor gear with the brush also including electrical connecting plugs which are to engage in a mating manner with sockets formed on the drive housing on which mounts the torch housing on the drive housing. The torch housing is to include a heat sink to dissipate excess heat from the welding procedure to keep the torch housing as cool as possible. The torch housing includes a gas passage arrangement for supplying inert gas to the area of the welding electrode.

    • A welding device is disclosed having an elongated actuator arm which is secured to a main support post by a cross arm. The cross arm is both slidably and pivotably mounted to the main support post and also pivotably and slidably secured to the actuator arm to enable a wide range of movement for the actuator arm. An elongated linkage bar extends through the actuator arm and a welding gun is attached to one end of the linkage bar. A handle is secured to the linkage bar adjacent the opposite end of the actuator arm so that movement of the handle simultaneously moves the welding gun. A second lever is also secured to the linkage bar at a midpoint along the actuator arm such that movement of the lever also moves the welding gun in the same fashion as the handle.

    • An apparatus for mounting a cutting torch to a shape cutting machine is adapted to detect contact between the torch and a workpiece in the vertical direction, and between the torch and an obstruction in a lateral direction. The mounting apparatus includes a torch holding sleeve, a bearing assembly, a base ring, and a pressure release valve assembly. The bearing assembly includes an inner race portion of the sleeve, three bearing plates, three bearing pins, and an outer race which is mounted to the base ring by three compressed springs. When the torch contacts the workpiece, the base ring, the bearing plates and outer race of the bearing assembly displace linearly relative to the sleeve. An adjustment screw releases a ball stud which presses a ball against a ball seat in the valve assembly. With the ball unseated, pressurized gas is permitted to escape past the ball and to the atmosphere. A pressure differential switch senses the difference in pressure and signals the programmed control logic of the shape cutting machine to reverse the direction of the output drive which moves the torch. Similarly, when the torch contacts an obstruction, the bearing assembly rotates relative to the base ring and again displaces linearly relative to the sleeve. The mounting apparatus is also adapted to return the torch to the same operating position after the torch is removed, and the same vertical location and orientation after the torch contacts an obstruction in a lateral direction.
