    • The present invention is directed to enable mode conversion between a TEM mode and another mode to be performed among a plurality of waveguides. An RF module comprises: a microstrip line as a first waveguide for propagating electromagnetic waves in a TEM mode; and a waveguide having a multilayer structure as a second waveguide connected to the first waveguide, for propagating electromagnetic waves in another mode different from the TEM mode. An end of the first waveguide is directly or indirectly connected so as to be conductive to one of ground electrodes of the second waveguide from the direction orthogonal to the stacking direction of the ground electrodes. Since magnetic fields are coupled so that the direction of the magnetic field of the first waveguide and that of the magnetic field of the second waveguide match with each other in the E plane, mode conversion between the TEM mode and another mode to be excellently performed between the waveguides.

One embodiment features an open-ended waveguide having an exposed side at a distal end, a substrate coupled to the open-ended waveguide at a proximate end, a resonator coupled to the substrate, a microstrip line electromagnetically coupled to the resonator, and a backshort coupled to the substrate. Another embodiment features receiving an electromagnetic wave, collecting an incident portion of the received electromagnetic wave, generating first wave having a resonance at a predetermined frequency using the incident portion of the received electromagnetic wave, reflecting a portion of the received electromagnetic wave off of a reduced scale backshort, back towards a collector, generating a second wave having a resonance at a predetermined frequency using the reflected portion of the received electromagnetic wave, and combining the first wave and the second wave in phase.

    • An arrangement for a junction between a microstripline and a waveguide is provided. The arrangement includes a microstripline fitted on the upper face of a dielectric substrate, a waveguide fitted on the upper face of the substrate and has an opening on at least one end surface and has a structure which is in the form of a step or steps in the area of the opening on one side wall and is conductively connected in at least one part to a microstripline. One side wall of the waveguide is a metallized layer formed on the substrate. A cutout is formed in the metallized layer and into which the microstripline projects. A rear-face metallization is formed on the rear face of the substrate, and electrically conductive via holes between the metallized layer on the upper face of the substrate and the rear-face metallization, which surround the cutout.
