The location information obtained by positioning will be provided by the femtocell base station to a core network for registration or broadcast by the femtocell base station within its coverage.

    • Speech signals to be sent between a first node and a second node via a wireless communication system are Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) encoded. A need to change the first node's first data transmission rate over a radio interface to a second different data transmission rate is determined. A new AMR source bit rate is then determined for both nodes. Information is sent to the second node, in advance of changing the data transmission rate over the radio interface, requesting the second node to change towards the new AMR source bit rate. After a predetermined time period sufficient for the second node to change from the current AMR source bit rate to the new AMR source bit rate expires or after the second node indicates a change to the new AMR source bit rate, the first node starts transmitting at the second data transmission rate over the radio interface.

    • Location-blocking and identity-blocking services that can be commercially offered by a service promoter, e.g., a cellular service provider or a web advertiser. In the identity-blocking service, the service promoter may disclose the current physical location of a mobile subscriber (i.e., a cellular phone operator) to a third party (e.g., a web advertiser) subscribing to the identity-blocking service. However, the service promoter may not send any identity information for the mobile subscriber to the third party. On the other hand, in the location-blocking service, the service promoter may disclose the mobile subscriber's identity information to the third party, but not the current physical location of the mobile subscriber. Blocking of the mobile subscriber's identity or location information may be desirable for privacy reasons, to comply with a government regulation, or to implement a telecommunication service option selected by the mobile subscriber. However, in the case of the mobile subscriber requesting emergency help, the service promoter may not block identity and/or location information. Instead, the service promoter may send all such information to the emergency service provider (e.g., the police or a hospital).

    • Neighbor cell relation lists are initialized and managed in various ways that are especially beneficial to closed subscriber group (CSG) cells served by CSG base stations. Typically, only a radio terminal belonging to the CSG is permitted to access and receive service from the CSG cell. As a result, information is provided to radio terminals in the cells neighboring the CSG cell that generally indicates that radio terminals are not to report to a respective serving base station signal quality measurements of a signal received from the CSG base station unless the radio terminal is a member of the closed subscriber group for the CSG cell. When a CSG cell is powered-up, it is determined whether the CSG cell has previously been powered-on in the same environment. If so, the neighbor cell relation information for the CSG cell is updated with other network node(s). If not, neighbor cell relations of the CSG cell are initialized. In one example, when a new neighbor cell relation has been added to its neighbor cell relation list, the CSG base station inherits neighbor cell relation list entries from the newly-added neighbor cell.
