    • Two magnetic valves, one of which reduces the pressure and the other one of which increases the pressure by which the displacement of a positioning member is controlled, only one of them operated at a time in accordance to the sign of the error signal, are operated in a pulsed mode with variable pulse width when the error signal is within a range of low absolute value and in a continuous mode of operation when the error signal has a higher absolute value. Variation of the magnitude of the error signal within the intermittent valve operation range controls pulse width variation. Hysteresis is provided in a transition between operating modes of a valve by a time delay of the mode change after the error signal has risen or fallen past a threshold value of signal. High displacement resolution is obtained as well as independence from effect of temperature drifts and magnetic valve characteristics.

    • In a motor control system for a DC motor, a modulation circuit provides a plurality of pulse width modulated signals to control the current applied to the motor. The motor is coupled to a current sensing resistor and a plurality of switches responsive to the pulse width modulated control signals. The output of the current sensing resistor is summed with an input current command to provide an error signal. A modulation circuit which includes a waveform generator generates a plurality of interposed triangular waves adjustably offset by a predetermined amount. The triangular waves are compared to the error signal to provide pulse width modulated control signals which cause a "dither" current to be applied to the motor when there is substantially no input command and currents having substantially decreasing form factors to be applied as the input command increases.

    • A digital controller includes a central processor unit for generating a processed signal to be stored in an up-down counter. A manipulation signal generation circuit converts the contents of the up-down counter to a manipulation signal for an actuator. A feedback signal from a first coupling circuit connected to the up-down counter through a pulse width converter is applied to the central processor through an analog input circuit. The output signal of the up-down counter from the first coupling circuit and the output signal of the manipulation signal generation circuit are compared by a monitor circuit. An abnormality detection signal of the monitor circuit is generated as a result of the comparison and is applied to the central processor unit through a second coupling circuit.

    • The invention relates to control apparatus for heat actuated devices of the type having a heating resistor and a spring biased motor member movable in response to heat generated by the resistor. A source of rectified AC voltage for the heating resistor is regulated by a controlled rectifier in series with the resistor. There is a comparator circuit for comparing a desired setting with the actual position of the motor member and generating a continuously variable control signal of a value corresponding to the departure value. An ignition circuit for pulsing the controlled rectifier has inputs including the control signal, a half wave AC voltage and a time dependent decreasing signal. The ignition circuit has an input threshold below which pulses are generated and above which pulses are not generated.

    • A four quadrant control system for a brushless D.C. motor wherein the windings are energized via a drive switching circuit in a bridge configuration and the switching circuit is in turn controlled by a read-only memory. Pulse-width modulation control signals and position signals are supplied to the read-only memory as addresses together with other control signals.     • An improved electromagnetic actuator apparatus comprising a plurality of circular concentric tubes of varying length arranged in length order nested about one another from shortest to longest. Solenoid coil assemblies are attached to each tube so that magnetic circuits are formed between adjacent solenoid coil assemblies attached to adjacent tubes. Stops are attached to each tube at the end opposite from the solenoid coil assemblies. One of the shortest tubes is connected to a frame by a positive motion stop in one direction. A return spring connects to a frame on one end and to a carriage attachment member which slides about the shortest concentric tube on the other end. Selective electric excitation of individual solenoid coil assemblies causes translation of said carriage attachment member. The return spring carries the means for carriage attachment back to a rest position when electrical excitation is removed.
