    • A vehicle identification system distinguishes vehicles in reduced visibility conditions based on the characteristic projection patterns associated with vehicle headlights and their reflections. Recognizing that the appearance of reflections of headlight beams in a camera image is highly dependent upon the angle of incidence/reflection relative to the camera, whereas the appearance of the headlights in the camera image is relatively consistent, the vehicle identification system distinguishes vehicles from their reflections based on the tracks of the illumination patterns in a series of images. In a first embodiment, headlights are distinguished from reflections based on a length of the tracks. In a second embodiment, recognition zones are selected as regions in the camera image that are not likely to provide reflections from normally aligned headlight beams. Pattern-matching and motion-correlation techniques are also used to identify the track of each vehicle in prior and subsequent image frames.

    • In a vehicular visual assistance system, an image picked up by an image pickup device is processed by an image processing device, and displayed on a display monitor. The image pickup device is mounted on a lower part of a door mirror housing, and is capable of picking up an image of a region that is continuous in the fore-and-aft direction. The imaged region includes part of a front region directly viewed by a vehicle driver, and part of a rear region indirectly viewed by the vehicle driver via a door mirror. The image processing device displays, on the display monitor, an imaged region for which at least front and rear boundaries thereof of the viewed regions overlap. Thus, it is possible to avoid a blind spot from occurring between the direct and indirect views and the image based on the picked up image, thereby improving visibility.

    • A compact system for determining the presence and speed of an object/vehicle, and its application for Red Light Camera photo-enforcement is disclosed. The disclosed system uses accurate timing, laser radiation in the form of optical pulses, and the scattering effect of optical pulses from the road or vehicle surface to determine the presence of a vehicle, and estimate its speed. The system can determine whether an object/vehicle is present at a specific location, estimate its height, and in the case that the object/vehicle is moving, the system can estimate its speed. Combining the disclosed technology with commercially available digital recording techniques and equipment, a traffic photo-enforcement system can be constructed. The system is capable of monitoring traffic in an intersection/highway, measure vehicle speed, identify potential traffic violations, and trigger a visual recording device such as a camera or video system for documenting a violation. The system can serve as a tool by law enforcement agencies and research groups for other applications, such as measurement of traffic density, monitor vehicle speed, and the study of traffic patterns. Other important information that can be generated from the disclosed system is the profile of a moving object/vehicle, the length of the moving object/vehicle, and whether the moving object/vehicle was accelerating or decelerating. Further analysis of the recorded data can yield information relevant to the make and model of the passing vehicles.

The enforcement units are spaced apart a given distance and each has a license plate reader. The enforcement units and the central computer cooperate to calculate an average velocity of a vehicle which passes between two not necessarily adjacent enforcement units by using the inputs of a) minimum-travel-time-drivable distance between enforcement units which transmitted matching identifying indicia, b) posted speed limit data between enforcement units which transmitted matching license plate numbers, and c) time lapsed between the transmission of the matching identifying indicia to the central computer. Optionally, after a predetermined amount of time, vehicle information which do not indicate violations, is erased.
