    • In a card edge connector, rotating pins are formed on the inner surfaces of the side walls of a box-shaped outer housing, while cylindrical bearings are formed on the outer surfaces of the side walls of inner housings in which electrically conductive terminals are accommodated. The inner housings are swingably held with the rotating pins engaged with the cylindrical bearings. The cylindrical bearings have cut-outs in the cylindrical walls which are opened in the direction of insertion, so that, as the inner housings are pushed into the outer housing, the rotating pins are engaged with the cylindrical bearings through the cut-outs. The inner housings are urged by spring members in such a manner that the abutting parts of the terminals are moved away from terminals formed on the connecting end portion of a printed circuit board. When the connecting end portion of the printed circuit board starts to enter the outer housing is started, the connecting end portion gently touches the abutting parts of the terminals. When the connecting end portion is fully pushed into the outer housing, introducing cams, which are formed on a hood surrounding the connecting end portion, cause the inner housings to swing towards the connecting end portion, so that the terminals are positively pushed against the abutting parts.

    • A sideswipe contact system for an add in PC card consisting of an apparatus for identifying the card as having a sideswipe connector and apparatus on a header for causing the header connectors to be electrically isolated from an inserted PC card unless the PC card is equipped with the sideswipe connectors. The header assembly includes a frame mechanically shaped to receive the card frame in an inserting relationship. A plurality of connector assemblies are movably mounted to the header frame. Each of the connector assemblies consists of an insulating standoff having substantially the same specified shape as the first cavity and fitting therein and a second electrical conductor adjacent to and smaller than the standoff. The plurality of connector assemblies are movable from a first position when the PC card is not inserted in the header frame to a second position when the card is fully inserted into the header. The movement from the first position to the second position is in a direction substantially orthogonal to the long dimension of the PC card. When the plurality of connectors assemblies are in the second position, each connector assembly fits into a matching connector receptacle and the first and second electrical conductors are in electrical contact. The plurality of connector assemblies move to a third position intermediate between the first and second positions if a PC card not having the plurality of connector receptacles is inserted into the header frame.

    • A connector assembly for electrically interconnecting first and second printed circuit board like members having electrical contacts thereon includes an elongated biasing member for being mounted on the first printed circuit board like member and flexible circuitry mounted on the biasing member. The biasing member possesses arm portions which are spaced apart to define therebetween a longitudinal opening for receiving a second printed circuit board like member. The flexible circuitry mounted on the biasing member includes a plurality of generally parallel-spaced electrical conductors for being electrically connected with the electrical contacts on the first printed circuit board like member when the biasing member is mounted on the first printed circuit board like member. The electrical conductors on the flexible circuitry each terminate at a contact pad and the flexible circuitry is positioned on the biasing member so that the contact pads are positioned on opposite sides of the longitudinal opening to effect an electrical connection with the electrical contacts on the second printed circuit board like member when the second printed circuit board like member is received within the longitudinal opening. An elastomer sheet is positioned between the contact pads of the flexible circuitry and the arm portions of the biasing member for allowing individual contact pads to move relative to other contact pads so as to compensate for height variations of the various electrical conductors on the second printed circuit board like member and thickness variations in the second printed circuit board like member.

    • A multicontact electrical connector (2) comprises an insulating housing (4) defining a plurality of pairs of adjacent rows of contact receiving cavities (18 and 20). In the upper cavity (18) of the middle row of superposed pairs of cavities (18 and 20) is a shorter contact element (38), a longer contact element (36) being supported in the cavity (20) immediately therebelow. Each longer contact element (36) has a bowed contact surface (42) which is nearer to the mating face (12) the housing (4) than the bowed contact surface (42) of the shorter contact element (38). The contact surfaces (42) of the contact elements (36 and 38) lie in slots (6,8,10) for receiving respective contact members (74,76,78) of a mating connector (66). The contact surfaces (42) of the longer contact elements (36), which surfaces lie in the upper slot (6), are bowed in the opposite direction to the contact surfaces (42) of the longer contact elements (36), which contact surfaces lie in the middle slot (8), thereby to exert equal and opposite forces against the respective contact members (74 and 76). Lateral forces acting between the mating connectors (4 and 66) are thereby reduced and by virtue of the staggered arrangement of the contact surfaces (42) in each slot (6,8,10) the force needed to mate the connectors is also reduced.

    • A zero-insertion force interconnect system. The interconnect system comprises at least two substantially parallel printed circuit boards on which electronic components are mounted. The printed circuit boards are held in place by a flexible U-shaped member running along one edge of each board. The U-shaped member includes a plurality of parallel electrical contacts, extending from either one of the printed circuit boards. The parallel electrical contacts are covered by insulator material with the exception of one small portion on each electrical contact. This exposed portion is mated with a mother board, which has a configuration of electrical contacts that matches the configuration of the U-shaped member. A resilient member is located behind the electrical contacts of the U-shaped member to provide wiping action between the contacts of the U-shaped member and the contacts of the mother board when the two units are brought together.

    • An electrical interconnect pin, particularly suitable for attachment to the edge of a flexible printed circuit board or "flex circuit", has an edge clip with an opening that can be temporarily enlarged to facilitate the attachment of the pin to the edge of a circuit board. The pin includes an elongated shank with a rectangular cross section and two substantially identical clips attached to opposite sides of the shank. To attach the pin to a printed circuit board, the pin is placed on a flat surface with the shank parallel to the surface. A force is then applied to the shank just below the clips and perpendicular to the surface. This force opens up the edge clip and the edge of the printed circuit board is then inserted into the opening of the edge clip. After the force is removed, the edge clip clamps down on the circuit board, temporarily attaching the pin to the board. The pins can then be permanently affixed to the board by soldering.
