    • A printer with a multi-segment printhead has multiple engine/controllers (10) configured to be coupled with other engine/controllers to drive the printhead (33). The controllers each have an interface (27) at which to receive compressed page data. Image decoders (28, 88) decode compressed image planes image decoders to perform an expansion, in pipeline fashion, for the received compressed page data. A half-toner/compositer (29) composites respective strips of the decoded image planes and sends output to a printhead interface (32). A printhead interface (32) interfaces with the printhead. A synchronization signal generator (89,90) may output a synchronization signal that is used to synchronize print engine/controllers. One printhead interface (32) preferably acts as master generating the synchronization signal to synchronize all the print engine/controllers to drive the printhead at any one or more of higher speed, higher input resolution, higher outlet resolution or wider format. The half-toner/compositor (29) scales input image planes under control of a margin unit (57) set the print engine/controller to establish print data for a strip only of the image, the image being built from the respective strips from the multiple print engine/controllers.

    • An image scanning apparatus efficiently compresses and encodes image data obtained by scanning both sides of an original sheet by using a line memory storing three lines. Image data output from a first scanner and image data output from a second scanner are alternately output from a switching unit on an individual line basis. The line memory stores three consecutive lines of the image data output from the switching unit. The three lines include a current line, an immediately preceding line and a second immediately preceding line immediately preceding the immediately preceding line, the current line including a current pixel being encoded. Reference pixels are extracted from among pixels included in the current line and the second immediately preceding line. A pixel value of the current pixel is encoded by using a predicted pixel value of the current pixel as a parameter so as to output encoded image data corresponding to both sides of the original sheet. The prediction of the pixel value is performed by referring to the reference pixels.

    • A Web advertising measurement system that correlates the number of impressions of Web advertisements with post-impression transactional activity to measure the effectiveness of the advertisements. When a user clicks on a banner advertisement, an impression is established and the user's identification is recorded. Then, when the user undertakes post-impression transactional activity such as downloading software related to the advertisement, ordering products and services related to the advertisement, and so on, the transactional activity along with the user's identification is recorded. Based on the user identifications, the number of impressions associated with the advertisements are correlated to the post-impression transactional activity as a measure of effectiveness of each advertisement.

    • One object of the present invention is to cut out areas of different natures from an image hierarchically. For encoding, an area identifier identifies areas of an input image. A multivalued area is encoded in a multivalued encoding mode. As for a bicolor area, typical-color values are computed and then encoded in a binary encoding mode. For decoding, multivalued coded data is decoded in a multivalued decoding mode. As for binary-coded data, values of pixels of a binary image resulting from binary decoding are transformed into multivalued data using associated typical-color values. The multivalued data is structured according to structural information, wherein areas of the data may be superposed mutually. Thus, an image is reconstructed.
