    • A low activation temperature heat seal hot melt adhesive for packaging applications based on a blend of metallocene catalyzed polyolefin polymer, tackifying resin, wax and other optional additives. In order to achieve the high viscosity suitable for an extrusion heat seal application, the adhesive composition of the invention is highly loaded with polymer, and thus should have a viscosity of about 50,000 centipoise or more measured at a temperature of 300° F. Accordingly, the hot melt adhesive composition contains about 50% to about 90% by weight of metallocene catalyzed polyolefin polymer, about 5% to about 50% by weight of tackifying resin, about 0.5% to about 40% by weight of wax, about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of a stabilizer or antioxidant, and 0% to about 25% by weight of optional additives. The hot melt adhesive composition must have an activation temperature of about 160° F. or less, and provide a minimum peel force of about 1.0 pound per inch in order to meet the sealing performance requirements for packaging food and other consumer goods.

    • A non-pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive for use in mailer applications uses a styrenic block copolymer (SBC) with a hydrogenated mid-block as the primary polymer in the composition. The adhesive contains about 10% to about 50% by weight of the SBC, about 2% to about 30% by weight of a polyolefin polymer as a secondary polymer in the composition, about 10% to about 70% by weight of a suitable plasticizer, about 0% to about 30% by weight of a wax, about 0% to about 50% by weight of one or more tackifying resins, about 0.1% to about 4% by weight of a stabilizer, and about 0% to about 3% by weight of auxiliary additives, so that the viscosity of the composition is equal to or less than about 10,000 cP at 163° C. The formulation balances the cohesive and adhesive strength required to insure the adhesive fails cohesively to prevent paper tear. In addition, the presence of the secondary polymer allows additional oil absorption into the polymer, thus preventing oil from staining the substrates or surfaces without significantly increasing the viscosity.

    • A hot melt adhesive composed of a styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer having a relatively high diblock content and styrene content, a second styrenic block copolymer having a lower diblock content than the styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer, which is preferably a styrene-isoprene-styrene polymer, together with tackifying resin, and liquid plasticizer.     • A water based, cold seal, cohesive coating for bonding one or more substrates together to form a flexible package to contain an article, especially useful for snack food packaging. The cohesive coating includes about 25% to about 90% by weight of a natural rubber latex emulsion, about 10% to about 75% by weight of a non-self-crosslinking acrylic emulsion, about 0.01% to about 10% by weight water, and one or more ingredient selected from an anti-foam agent, ammonia, a surfactant, an anti-blocking agent, an inert filler, and a conditioning agent, so that in combination the components total 100% by weight of the composition. The use of a non-self-crosslinking acrylic emulsion provides an improved cold seal cohesive that may be employed with current high temperature converting systems and provides improved adhesion to substrates, enhanced cohesion to itself, reduced blocking and avoids seal deadening.

    • A method and apparatus for post mixing an additive with a hot melt adhesives. The method includes the steps of providing a source of molten hot melt adhesive, feeding the hot melt adhesive to an inlet of a mixer, simultaneously feeding an additive for the hot melt adhesive to the inlet of the mixer, mixing the additive and molten hot melt adhesive in the mixer to form a homogeneous mixture, and recovering the homogenous mixture. The additive is preferably selected from wetness indicators, antimicrobial agents, pigments, dyes, ultraviolet light absorbers, antioxidants, fluorescent agents, pH indicators and fragrances. The method may be practiced either on a batch basis, or on a continuous basis. The apparatus includes a vessel containing molten hot melt adhesive, a mixer located downstream from the vessel, the mixer having an inlet and an outlet, a first pump located between the vessel and the mixer for pumping molten hot melt adhesive from the vessel to the inlet of the mixer, a source of an additive for the hot melt adhesive, and a second pump located between the source of the additive and the mixer for pumping the additive to the inlet of the mixer. The mixer may comprise either a static mixer or a dynamic mixer.
