    • Systems for switching traffic include a physical machine running source and destination virtual machines (VMs). The source VM issues a data unit addressed to the destination VM. The physical machine has a physical network interface in communication with the VMs. The physical network interface transmits a sub-packet, which includes a partial portion of the data unit, over a network while a majority portion of the data unit remains at the physical machine. A network switch on the network receives the sub-packet transmitted by the physical network interface. The network switch performs one or more OSI Layer 2 through Layer 7 switching functions on the sub-packet and returns that sub-packet to the physical network interface. The physical network interface identifies the data unit stored in the memory in response to the sub-packet returned from the network switch and forwards the identified data unit to the destination VM.

    • Described are systems and methods for upgrading a software program between sequential or non-sequential versions. An interface definition file of a first version of the software program is stored. The software program is upgraded from the first version to a second version. The second version of the software program is stored in the memory. A determination is made regarding the availability of a difference tool. The difference tool determines according to a static comparison one or more differences between the interface definition file of the first version and an interface definition file of the second version, and generates a results file that displays the determined differences.

    • A unified scribed image for installing software on different storage system platforms and configurations is described. The scribed image is produced by installing on a reference storage system reference system software including reference system core components usable by all storage systems, and reference system unique components used only by the reference storage system. Reference system software representing shared components used by pairs of storage systems is added. The reference system software related to the reference system unique components is then removed. The remaining core components and shared components to are scribed to media to produce the unified scribed image. Methods of using the unified scribed image to install storage system software in various storage systems are also described.

    • A magnetic recording head for perpendicular magnetic recording includes energizing means, a recording pole, and a return pole. The recording pole narrows to a tip region with leading and trailing write edges separated by first and second side edges. The tip region provides a low reluctance path for magnetic flux generated by the energizing means. The return pole has a shield flare projecting towards the trailing write edge. A gap separates a leading edge of the shield flare from the trailing write edge. The shield flare diverts magnetic flux from reaching the tip region, thereby shielding the recording medium beneath the shield flare from the magnetic field while the side edges of the tip region and the recording medium beneath the gap are unshielded. A rear flare smoothes the discontinuity at the trailing edge of the return pole, thus reducing the peak magnetic field under the return pole.

    • Described are a method and device for determining three-dimensional position information of a surface of a translucent object having a wavelength-dependent transmittance and reflectance characteristics. The method includes illuminating the surface of the translucent object with optical radiation at a predetermined wavelength emitted from a pair of optical sources. Radiation scattered from the surface and below the surface is detected, and a phase of the optical radiation from one of the optical sources relative to a phase of the optical radiation from the other optical source is changed before again detecting the scattered radiation. The predetermined wavelength is selected so that the optical radiation scattered from below the surface and detected provides a substantially constant background intensity with respect to the optical radiation scattered from the surface and detected. Three-dimensional position information of the surface is calculated in response to the detected radiation.
