    • A detecting base station transmits user zone information to wireless communication device when the presence of a wireless communication device is detected. A detecting base station receives a detection signal, such as an uplink signal, transmitted from the wireless communication device to determine the presence of the wireless communication device. The detecting base station notifies the core network the detection by transmitting a device proximity message and, after receiving authorization from the network, transmits the user zone information within the broadcast channel used by the originating base station communicating to the wireless communication device.

    • An apparatus, system, and method for managing geographical location information of a portable communication device by determining and storing the geographic location information while registered on a cellular communication system in response to detecting an available wireless local area network (WLAN) system. When the portable communication device is communicating on the cellular communication system and a WLAN access point is detected, a location determination procedure is performed and the resulting geographical location information is stored at the portable communication device. When the portable communication device is communicating with a wireless access point of a WLAN system, and a second access point is detected, the portable communication device registers to the cellular communication network, if not already registered, and performs the geographical location determination procedure. Geographical location information is transmitted to a public safety answering point (PSAP) or network entity when an emergency call is executed.

    • A base station is configured to reduce interference with other base stations and/or devices in a multi-cell wireless network. The base station includes a wireless interface, detector and controller. To reduce interference, the wireless interface may provide services to a first wireless communication device (WCD) using a pilot signal emitted from the base station at a reduced power level. In the reduced pilot signal mode, when the detector detects a second WCD within the base station's service area, the controller increases the pilot signal's power level above the reduced power level in order to establish communications with the second WCD. Upon successfully connecting to the first and second WCDs, the base station may again reduce the pilot signal's power level to reduce interference with other base stations or wireless devices.

    • In a wireless communication system, data is encoded by packet indifferent (PI) coding and some packets are transmitted omnidirectionally while supplemental packets are transmitted directionally to a user with a poor air link. PI encoding is defined herein as encoding in which the source data can be recovered from any K of the encoded packets, regardless of which of the encoded packets are received, where K=N+A. N is equal to the number of packets in the source data and A is the number of additional packets required due to the PI encoding. A subset of M data packets can be sent to one or many users from an omnidirectional antenna, where M is greater than or equal to K. If less than K data packets are received by at least one user, then the data block is not successfully received by that user. A number R of supplemental packets can be sent to users that did not receive K data packets successfully. The supplemental packets can be sent by a directional antenna to the specific user or users that did not receive K data packets.

    • An improved smart antenna reception method and devices are provided that determine when to select a new antenna configuration in a multiple antenna configuration system. One embodiment attempts to eliminate unneeded configuration searching. Unneeded configuration searching can degrade overall signal quality and system performance. Configuration changing can be minimized by determining that a signal quality received from a first antenna configuration is below a threshold and changing antenna configuration. After changing antenna configuration, if the signal quality received from the second antenna configuration is lower than the signal quality received from the first antenna configuration the threshold can be lowered. By lowering the threshold, the probability of additional configuration changing can be reduced.

    • A system and method for paging wireless mobile devices selectively varies the effective modulation order of a paging channel to achieve improved coverage in a wireless wide area network (WWAN) cell. In one embodiment, the paging channel modulation order is selected based on a measured signal strength and/or common channel error rate. The selected modulation order is directly related to the quality of the channel environment. In another embodiment, a page message is segregated into base and extended components that are layer modulated. With layered modulation, wireless mobile devices in good coverage regions can successfully demodulate both the base and extended components to recover the entire page message. Wireless mobile devices in poor coverage regions can successfully demodulate the base component of the page message, and then request that the extended component of the page message be re-broadcast as a base component to thereby recover the entire page message.

    • An apparatus, system, and method manage a transmission antenna system by measuring an antenna performance indicator of an alternate antenna configuration during a reduced data rate transmission. After an antenna performance indicator is measured in a current (first) antenna system configuration, the antenna system is configured to an alternate (second) configuration during a reduced data rate transmission and the antenna performance indicator of the alternate (second) configuration is measured. The antenna performance indicators for both configurations are evaluated to determine the optimum antenna system configuration for transmission. If the alternate (second) configuration will result in decreased performance, the antenna system is changed back to the first antenna system configuration. Otherwise, the alternate (second) configuration is defined as the current configuration and the first antenna configuration is evaluated during reduced rate transmissions.

    • An exemplary wireless device includes a communication radio and a position location receiver. When the wireless device has established a call with the communication radio, and a request for position location is received, the communication radio is deactivated while the position location information is collected using the position location receiver. A local warning message is communicated to the user of the mobile device while the communication radio is disabled. The warning message may be a text display, a graphical display, an audio message, or an input-key challenge. By generating and presenting the local warning message, the user is made aware that the lack of normal call activity is expected and temporary. After the position location information is collected, the call is resumed with the communication radio, and the position location information is transmitted. Since the mobile device is now acting with normal call activity, the local warning is removed.
