摘要： A communication system utilizes at least one digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) at an intermediate point between a network facility and one or more customer premises. Initially, as few as one DSLAM, may be implemented at the intermediate point, but the system can be expanded to include any number of DSLAMs at the intermediate point. Any of the DSLAMs at the intermediate point can be selectively upgraded at any time to a vectoring solution as may be desired. The use of such DSLAMs provides the network service provider with flexibility in implementing and maintaining the network.

摘要： A technique for providing reliability to an interconnect fabric for communication among a set of nodes. The technique may be used to efficiently and programmatically produce a cost-effective interconnect fabric having a degree of reliability over a range of design problems. In one aspect, ports associated with each node are partitioned into a first set of ports and a second set of ports. A primary interconnect fabric is formed among the first set of ports in response to a set of flow requirements and a backup interconnect fabric is formed among the second set of ports. The backup interconnect fabric carries a portion of communications carried by the primary fabric so as to protect against a failure of an element in the primary fabric.

A design for an interconnect fabric is obtained having an interconnect device layer. The layer is adjacent to either the set of source nodes or the set of terminal nodes. Flow sets that traverse the layer of interconnect devices are identified. A pair of the flow sets are merged thereby alleviating at least one port violation. The technique may be implemented programmatically by a design tool.

摘要： An automated system adaptation technique for computer systems, networks and subsystems generally and, more particularly, for data storage systems. The invention programmatically designs, configures and manages a system, such as a data storage system. This is accomplished by performing a sequence of steps in an iterative loop, including analyzing the operation of the system under a workload, generating a new design based on the analysis and migrating the existing system to the new design. By systematically exploring a large design space and developing designs based on analyses of the workload, the invention generates designs that are improved in comparison to conventional design techniques. By programmatically repeating these tasks, the invention causes the system to converge to one that supports the workload without being over-provisioned.

Each data storage device is tested to determine whether it can satisfy a performance requirement for an assigned group of n workloads. A group of n inequalities are generated, and only up to n of the inequalities may be evaluated to determine whether the device satisfies the performance requirement for the assigned group of workloads. The inequalities are based on a phased, correlated model of I/O activity.
