    • A de-interlacing methodology generates frames from interlaced video signals by incorporating data from multiple fields into an interpolation-based de-interlacing process. Pixels directly above and below a blank pixel location and pixels immediately before and after the blank pixel location (in the fields immediately preceding and following, respectively, the blank pixel field) can be used to interpolate a pixel value for the blank pixel location. The use of pixel data from multiple fields improves the resolution of the interpolation process, thereby improving output frame accuracy. Adjacent pixel values can also be adjusted to further improve the consistency of the visual display provided by the output frames.

The method and system determines whether an interlaced video stream is a normal mode video stream or a converted mode video stream. Converted mode video streams, which are interlaced video streams created from an original progressive video stream, are deinterlaced using converted mode deinterlacing, which involves merging two fields to form a frame. Normal mode interlaced video streams are deinterlaced using normal mode deinterlacing, which involves converting a field into a frame using line repeating or some form of interpolation to generate the missing scan lines.

A scaled saturation enhancement factor calculation unit generates a scaled saturation enhancement factor using a base saturation enhancement factor. A lookup table contains tabled saturation enhancement factors that can be used as the scaled saturation enhancement factor when the base saturation enhancement factor would cause the saturation enhanced U chrominance value or the saturation enhanced V chrominance value to exceed a valid range of chrominance values.

The image enhancement unit combines a contour enhancement unit, a luminance contrast stretching unit, a color transient improvement unit, and a color saturation control unit to enhance both the luminance and chrominance values in the video stream. Specifically, the contour enhancement unit processes the luminance values to improve the contours of the images in the video steam. The luminance contrast stretching unit further improves the luminance by enhancing the contrast in the images. The color transient improvement unit processes the chrominance values to remove blurring around along the edges of color transitions and the color saturation control unit increases the color saturation to improve the appearance of the images.
