    • A cloud environment is provided generally having at least one private data center possessing a controller/routing system and nonvolatile mass storage, a plurality of data objects retained in the nonvolatile mass storage, and a public cloud storage service provider linked to the controller/routing system. The public cloud storage service provider possessing a database containing policy decisions and metadata of the plurality of data objects. When data objects are uploaded to the cloud environment, the private data center is in possession of the data objects, the public cloud is not in possession of the data objects. The private data center is not in possession of the policy decisions and the metadata for the plurality of data objects, rather the public cloud storage service provider is. The public cloud storage service provider adapted to be communicatively linked to an end-user computing system by way of the controller/routing system. The end-user able to retrieve data objects from the cloud environment via the private data center that ascertains location information of one or more target data objects from one or more private data centers. The data objects retrieved do not pass through the public cloud service provider, but rather over data pathways independent of the public cloud service. The data center is independent of the public cloud storage provider.

    • A magazine-based data storage library is described that essentially provides a first tape cartridge adapted to retain first data and first metadata, a second tape cartridge adapted to retain second data and second metadata, a random access storage memory, such as a hard disk drive, whereon parity of the first data and the second data along with the first metadata and second metadata is retained. It is not required that the first data and the second data be written in parallel. The parity data on the random access storage memory is transferred to a parity tape, which can be used to reconstruct any data lost from either the first tape cartridge or the second tape cartridge.

A commonality factoring module executes computer instructions stored in memory to assign commonality information to the user data. A deduplication module executes computer instructions stored in memory to combine a plurality of files of the user data (user data files) with at least one file of corresponding commonality information (commonality information file), the combined files forming a sequential data stream.

    • Embodiments described are generally directed to ensuring a data storage device originated from a first location. The data storage device including a unique identifier visibly attached to said data storage device and the unique identifier digitally retained by the data storage device. At a first location a first hash of said unique identifier is generated via a hash function. Also at the first location a public key and a private key are created. The first hash is cryptographically signed using the private key. Before sending the data storage device to a second location the cryptographically signed hash is stored to the data storage device along with the public key. At the second location, a second hash of said unique identifier is generated using the same hash function used at the first location. The second hash is compared with a recovered version of the cryptographically signed hash which is decrypted by pairing the cryptographically signed hash with said public key. If the second hash is the same as the recovered first hash the data storage device is validated as originating from the first location.
