    • A portable vibratory wet concrete screed includes a blade, an exciter that is selectively driven to induce vibrations in the blade, at least one operator-manipulated handle connected to the blade and extending upwardly and rearwardly, a laser receiver mounted on the screed at a height above an upper end of the handle, and an indicator that is operatively connected to the receiver. The indicator provides a visual indication of the screed height relative to a desired grade. It is located remote from the receiver at a location which, when viewed from the perspective of a person in the vicinity of a screed operator, is at least substantially in a focal area containing the rear edge of the blade. The handle is mounted on the blade so as to be foldable from an upright, operative position in which it extends vertically and horizontally well beyond horizontal and vertical footprints occupied by a combination of the blade and the exciter to a stowed position in which it is positioned at least substantially entirely within the horizontal and vertical footprints.

    • A self-propelled concrete finishing trowel has a transport system or dolly that allows the towel to be moved manually. The transport system includes wheels that are connected to a frame of the trowel by a connector such as a rotatable shaft. A single lift device such as a jack is coupled to the connector such that operation of the lift device translates both wheels relative to the frame. The transport system allows a user to quickly deploy the wheels for non-use transportation. The wheels are also located within the footprint of the trowel so as not to interfere with a finishing operation and are positioned to maximize stability.

    • In a riding concrete finishing trowel, a stabilizer is operatively disposed between the frame and either the gearbox or a structure that is coupled to the gearbox. Such a stabilizer has been found to reduce the effects of rotor assembly vibration on the trowel greater than would be expected and even to improve steering response. In one embodiment, the stabilizer takes the form of a gas spring located between the frame and the pitch control post. Preferably, this gas spring is located relatively close to the top of the pitch control post so as to take advantage of the mechanical advantage offered by the spacing between that location and the gearbox.

    • A self-propelled concrete finishing trowel has a steering system that counteracts a portion of the load associated with operator manipulation of a steering handle. A steering linkage connects the steering handle to a rotor assembly. A steering assist mechanism, preferably including a torsion bar or a spring, imposes a preload on the steering linkage to reduce handle actuation forces. The steering assist mechanism reduces handle retention forces, required to maintain the handle in a particular position after moving the handle to that position, to less than about 20 lbs throughout the stroke of the operating handle.

    • A fluid level sensor comprises a parallel plate capacitor coupled to an integrated circuit located in the bottom of an oil pan or other receptacle in which fluid level is being sensed. The sensor is preferably mounted on a drain plug for the receptacle. It includes an integrated circuit board encapsulated in a potting material disposed within the drain plug and a probe extending upwardly from the integrated circuit with its lower end also encapsulated with a resin such that its leads are protected by the resin encapsulating the integrated circuit. The probe may include one or more slotted plates in which capacitance bridges are formed within the slots or a plurality of parallel plates in which capacitance bridges are formed between adjacent plates. The sensor can be used to control operation of a gauge and/or an ignition control circuit for the machine's engine.
