    • Apparatuses and methods are provided for controlling a self-propelled machine wherein the apparatuses and methods include a handle and a control device and can utilize first and second linking members. The control device is pivotably coupled to the handle, and includes a slidable control portion that is linearly translatable relative to the handle. The first linking member includes a first proximal section that is coupled to the control device, and a first distal section that is engagable with the machine. The first linking member is actuatable in response to pivoting of the control device. The second linking member includes a second proximal section coupled to the control device and a first distal section engagable with a transmission. The second linking member is actuatable in response to sliding of the slidable control portion. The control device can be pivoted between an ON state and an OFF state to implement operator presence control. The slidable control portion can be linearly translated to implement variable speed control.

    • An aerodynamic bicycle that reduces intra-abdominal pressure, improves aerodynamic performance, and improves muscular power efficiency includes various structures to support and hold the driver in a lying down, prone position, rather than in a sitting position. The bicycle includes: (a) a front wheel; (b) a rear wheel; (c) a frame connected to the front wheel and the rear wheel; (d) a handlebar for controlling a direction of travel of the bicycle; (e) a seat member supporting a gluteus region of the bicycle driver; (f) a first support member for supporting hips of the driver; (g) a second support member for supporting an axillary or sternal region of the driver; (h) a first, smaller sprocket located at the hub of the rear wheel; (i) a pedal unit including two pedals and a second sprocket located proximate to a circumference of the rear wheel; and (j) a chain connecting the first sprocket and the second sprocket. A top surface of the seat member on which the gluteus region of the driver is supported is arranged at an angle between vertical and horizontal such that the gluteus region of the driver is supported against gravitational forces without placing the driver in a sitting position. A seat guide movably holds the seat member such that it can be adjusted to different heights. The seat member is removably fastened to the seat guide such that these two elements can be rapidly unfastened in the event that the bicycle driver falls.

    • A laser beam is directed onto a light detector along a path passing close to the spray orifice(s) of a fuel-injector spray nozzle. The photoelectric signal produced by the light detector is fed to an automatic signal-content evaluating unit. To test the nozzle for proper buzzing, fuel is applied to the nozzle at a predetermined pressure and volumetric flow rate preferably corresponding to those for which the nozzle is designed. If the nozzle buzzes properly the photoelectric signal is pulsating, otherwise continuous. To test the nozzle for seal-tightness, fuel is applied to the nozzle for a limited testing interval at a pressure lower by a predetermined amount than the opening pressure of the spray nozzle. If the nozzle is insufficiently seal-tight, drops of fuel are discharged from the spray orifice(s) resulting in corresponding alteration of the photoelectric signal. The automatic signal-content evaluating unit evaluates the photoelectric-signal content with respect to amplitude and frequency or pulse duration.
