    • An apparatus is used for cutting guide tubes of a nuclear fuel assembly below an end-piece and removing the end-piece. The apparatus includes a mount which may be removably locked and centered on the end-piece. Cutting tools insertable in the guide tubes each include a hollow shaft whose end part is split by longitudinal slits into radially expandable fingers each having a cutting edge. A stem movable axially along each shaft cooperates therewith for spreading the fingers out radially and retracting them. The shafts are mounted for rotation on a plate which is vertically movable with respect to the mount by a jack and carries a motor for simultaneously rotating all shafts. The shafts are carried by an expansion unit movable vertically with respect to the plate by a jack and including the stems. A method for separating the end-piece with the apparatus is also described.

    • A tool (78) for grasping a multiplicity of nuclear fuel rods (42) to remove them from a nuclear fuel assembly (32) and relocate them, preferably, into a fuel consolidation device (86). The tool has a gripper head (200) reciprocably guided within a shroud (80). A distinct jaw mechanism (216) for grasping each of the multiplicity of fuel rods is carried by a common frame (214) and actuated and controlled by a distinct means (232, 234, 242). A key feature of the gripper head is that each jaw mechanism (216) has an neck portion (244) to offset the actuation means (232, 234) from the moving jaw portion (220). The shroud carries alignment means (82, 206) for precisely orienting the tool relative to a targeted group of rods within the assembly, so that the spacing of the rods is maintained as they are pulled up into the shroud by the gripper head.

    • A high load gas combustion apparatus for use mainly in domestic combustors which require a low noise level and compactness. Some of the air for burning supplied from a fan is suctioned to fuel gas jetted through a nozzle to produce a mixture in a mixing tube section, which is then introduced to a mixture chamber defined by a burner body having a uniform shape in the lengthwise direction. The mixture flows into a downstream combustion chamber at a relatively low speed through a flame port section which is incorporated in the burner body on the downstream side of the mixture chamber, and which comprises a number of flame ports having a large opening ratio. The majority of air is supplied to air chambers on both sides of the mixture chamber partitioned by the burner body therefrom. The air chambers and the combustion chamber are partitioned by an air jet plate which includes a number of air ports arranged in wave-like form in the oblique portion thereof and a number of flame retention air ports arranged in the lengthwise direction of the flame port section. Some of the air supplied to the air chambers is supplied under reduced pressure to a flame retention chamber, which is constituted by a recess formed in a part of the burner body on either side of the flame port section, through small gaps formed between the air jet plates and the side wall of the recess, and then flows into the combustion chamber at a lower speed from both sides of the flame port section through the flame retention air ports, thus ensuring flame retention. The majority of the air supplied to the air chambers flows into the combustion chamber through the air ports so as to cross the direction of flow of the mixture for producing a steady flame along the air ports arranged in zigzag form, thus greatly enlarging the combustion reaction area.

    • A radiation-tight coupling arrangement for coupling a machining laser to a hot cell containing radioactive material, comprising a cell flange integrally formed on the confinement wall which defines a cell opening, a cell door formed to interlock tightly with the cell flange, thereby closing the cell opening, an elongated container movably arranged in the sleeve and having a container flange defining a container opening and connected by a sealing bellows, a container door formed to interlock tightly with the container flange and to interlock with the cell door when the container flange interlocks with the cell flange, and a machining line translationally arranged in the container. When the container is in a retracted position, a radiation blocking drum intervenes between the cell opening and the container opening. The radiation blocking drum is rotated to allow the container to translate toward the cell. As a result of rotation of the container, the container flange interlocks with the cell flange and the container door interlocks with the cell door. The container door and cell door are then removed in tandem, allowing the machine head of the machining line to be inserted into the hot cell. The laser beam passes through the machine head and impinges on the radioactive material to be cut.

    • The spent fuel consolidation system provides a system for vertically and remotely dismantling an irradiated nuclear fuel assembly while the fuel assembly remains submerged in a coolant and for consolidating the spent fuel rods of the dismantled fuel assembly. The system comprises a platform rotatably mounted on a vertical support with a fuel assembly station, a consolidation station, and a canister station attached to the platform. A gripper mechanism is slidably disposed on the vertical support for transferring spent fuel rods from one station to another as the various stations are rotated into alignment with the gripper mechanism. The fuel assembly station provides a station for holding the fuel assembly while the spent fuel rods are removed therefrom, the consolidation station provides a station for consolidating the spent fuel rods, and the canister station provides a station for holding the consolidated spent fuel rods.

    • Both a method and arrangement for consolidating and storing nozzles removed from nuclear PWR fuel assemblies is disclosed herein. In the method of the invention, top or bottom nozzles that are removed from nuclear fuel assemblies incident to a reconstitution procedure are stacked one upon another. The resulting stack of either top or bottom nozzles is secured together by a combination of plates, rods having threaded ends, and nuts which do not increase the outer dimensions of the nozzles forming the stack. This allows the resulting stack to be loaded into a spent fuel bin where the secured stack of nozzles may be stored in a consolidated manner for ultimate disposal. To implement the method of the invention, a nozzle stacking bin is provided which provides a means for receiving individual nozzles and forming a stacked assembly of such. A securing means for binding the stack assembly together is further provided as well as a nozzle handling tool for manipulating the nozzles into the stacking bin and, in the case of top nozzles, also for bringing the nozzles to and from a nozzle turnover device.
