The invention relates to a method for producing flame-retardant fiber and the flame-retardant fiber obtained thereby. The method comprises the following steps: a) spinning by a polyvinyl alcohol raw material to obtain polyvinyl alcohol fiber; b) soaking the polyvinyl alcohol fiber obtained in the step a) into an aqueous solution of a tetrahydroxymethyl phosphorus compound to obtain the soaked fiber; c) pre-dehydrating the soaked fiber obtained in the step b) to obtain the pre-dehydrated fiber; d) drying the pre-dehydrated fiber obtained in the step c) to obtain the dried fiber; e) performing ammonia fumigation on the dried fiber obtained in the step d) to obtain the ammonia fumigated fiber; and f) oxidizing the ammonia fumigated fiber obtained in the step e) to obtain the flame-retardant fiber.
