A variable gain amplifier (1) is provided with: signal transmission circuits (10, 20) including a plurality of amplifying transistor sections (111-11N, 211-21N) connected in parallel between signal input sections (2P, 2N) and signal output sections (3P, 3N); a load circuit (40) connected between a supply line of a power supply voltage (VDD) and output-side end sections of the signal transmission circuits (10, 20); a signal short-circuiting circuit (30) including a short-circuiting transistor section (31) connected between the supply line of the power supply voltage (VDD) and input-side end sections of the signal transmission circuits (10, 20); a constant current source circuit (42); and a transistor control circuit (46). The transistor control circuit (46) selects the fixed number of transistor sections to be brought into an on-state from among the amplifying transistor sections (111-11N, 211-21N) and the short-circuiting transistor sections (31), and supplies a control voltage to bring the thus selected transistor sections into the on-state.
