    • Cylindrical cells each comprising a metal container for cell contents and sheathed by plastic material, which sheath is covered at least on the cylindrical part of the container by a metallic armoring jacket are disclosed. This jacket is formed from a rolled metallic sheet, whose adjoining edges do not overlap. The jacket at its lower end at least is tightened about the plastic sheath by means of a compressive metallic ring having substantially an L cross-section. In a modified form a second similar ring may be applied at the upper end of the jacket. Jackets of simple structure, requiring no complex material for mounting in place on the plastic sheathed container with no important variations in the dimensions of cells provided with such armoring jackets over cells not having them result.

    • A METHOD OF PREPARING NEGATIVE ELECTRODES FOR ALKALINE STORAGE CELLS BY INCORPORATING ACTIVE ELECTRODE MATERIAL INTO POROUS METAL CARRIERS, FOR EXAMPLE, FOR SINTERED NICKEL BY IMPREGNATING THE CARRIER WITH AN ACIDIFIED CADMIUM SALT SOLUTION, THEN PRECIPITATING CADMIUM HYDROXIDE AND INCIDENTALLY NICKEL HYDROXIDE IN ITS PORES BY IMMERSION IN AN ALKALI METAL SOLUTION, THEN WASHING AND DRYING THE PRECIPITATE BEARING CARRIER, THEREAFTER HEATING SUCH CARRIER AT TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 200 TO 500*C. IN AIR OR INERT ATMOSPHERE FOR A SELECTED PERIOD OF TIME TO CONVERT THE NICKEL AND CADMIUM HYDROXIDES INTO RESPECTIVE OXIDES, THEREAFTER REHYDRATING THE HEATED OXIDE BEARING CARRIER BY IMMERSION IN AN AQUEOUS LIQUID SUCH AS WATER OR AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF A NICKEL SALT OR AN ALKALI METAL HYDROXIDE MAINTAINED AT A TEMPERATURE OF APPROXIMATELY 80*C. FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 TO 2 HOURS. THIS CONVERTS THE CADMIUM OXIDE TO CADMIUM HYDROXIDE WITHOUT SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTING THE NICKEL OXIDE. SUBSEQUENTLY WASHING THE SO-TREATED CARRIER BEARING CADMIUM HYDROXIDE AND SUCH NICKEL OXIDE AND FINALLY WASHING AND FINALLY DRYING THE ELECTRODE PREFERABLY IN CARBONATED AIR. THE RESULTANT NEGATIVE ELECTRODE HAS A MATERIALLY REDUCED AMOUNT OF DELETERIOUS OR PARASITIC POSITIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL AND INCREASED POROSITY AND FLEXIBILITY AS COMPARED WITH LIKE NEGATIVE ELECTRODES PRODUCED BY CONVENTIONAL CARRIER IMPREGNATING AND PRECIPATING PROCEDURE. NEGATIVE ELECTORDES RESULTING FROM THE PROCESS OF THIS INVENTION AND ALKALINE STORAGE CELLS WITH SUCH NEGATIVE ELECTRODES ARE ALSO DISCLOSED.

THE INTEGRAL TABS OF THE OTHER ELECTRODE BEING ELECTRICALLY JOINED AS BY WELDING TO A CENTRALLY LOCATED CONTACT STUD AT THE UPPER END OF THE CONTAINER AFTER PASSAGE OF SAID LAST-NAMED TABS THROUGH A SLOTTED INSULATED MEMBER POSITIONED ABOVE THE SPIRAL

      ASSEMBLY. ANOTHER INSULATOR MEMBER LIES BETWEEN THE LATTER SLOTTED INSULATOR AND A SEALING COVER FOR THE UPPER END OF THE CONTAINER. A CENTRAL INSULATING ROD IN THE SPIRAL ASSEMBLY ABUTS THE UPPER AND LOWER SLOTTED INSULATORS AND AIDS IN PREVENTING AXIAL DISPLACEMENT OF THE SPIRAL ASSEMBLY BECAUSE OF THE ABUTMENTOF THE LOWER SLOTTED INSULATOR WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER AND THE ABUTMENT OF THE UPPER SLOTTED INSULATOR WITH THE INSULATOR MEMBER THAT ABUTS THE COVER. THE CONTACT STUD ALSO IS INSULATED FROM THE COVER BY ADDITIONAL INSULATION. THE COVER IS SEALED AS BY WELDING TO THE CONTAINER.
