    • An orthosis is provided which is mountable on a knee having a femoral head and patella. The orthosis has upper and lower arms positionable about the knee and a hinge assembly positioned between the upper and lower arms at the knee to one side of the patella. A compression member is positioned at the femoral head adjacent to the patella on the opposite side of the patella from the hinge assembly. The compression member includes a tracking guide engaging the knee and a compression place in overlying engagement with the tracking guide. A tension strap is connected to the hinge assembly at an offset connection point by means of a tension strap mount. The tension strap applies a tension force to the compression member which increases when the upper and lower arms rotatably transition from the flexion position to the extension position and decreases when the upper and lower arms rotatably transition from the extension position to the flexion position.

    • An orthopaedic support having outer and inner resilient layers wherein the outer resilient layer is comprised of neoprene or another material suitable for surrounding and supporting a portion of the human anatomy through compression and a inner resilient layer generally coextensive with a substantial portion of the outer resilient layer which may be comprised of a material selected to enhance the performance and comfort of the orthopaedic support. The inner and outer resilient layers may be secured together in discrete zones but are otherwise freely stretchable or movable relative to one another. Where desired, the outer resilient layer may be provided with an aperture configured to receive a discrete area of the supported body member such as the knee cap which may be sensitive to pressure. The inner resilient layer of such a support may be provided with a corresponding aperture or, in the alternative, the inner resilient layer may extend across the aperture in the outer resilient layer. In the latter case, it may be advantageous if the inner resilient layer is comprised of material suitable for exerting a light restraining force on the sensitive area. A supplemental resilient member may be provided adjacent the inner surface of the outer resilient layer or the outer surface of the inner resilient layer after which the overlapping portions may be subjected to heat and compression so as to decrease the thickness (and increase the density) of discrete portions of the supplemental resilient member and the overlapping portion of the inner or outer resilient layer and to cause the uncompressed or partially compressed portions of such member and layer to form an interface whereby the non-adjoining surface of the supplemental resilient member is substantially flush with the portion of the surface of the inner or outer resilient layer adjacent thereto.

    • A dynamic patella brace having a first knee enveloping member with an aperture adapted to expose the patella, and a device for applying medial pressure to the patella. A mounting system for substantially freely floatingly mounting the device for applying medial pressure on the knee enveloping member laterally of the aperture so that the device for applying medial pressure moves relative to the knee enveloping member in vertical and horizontal directions and automatically tracks vertical movements of said patella throughout the physiological range of flexion and extension of the knee while applying medial pressure to the patella, the mounting accommodating horizontal excursions; thereby allowing more controlled horizontal medial pressure and tracking vertical movements of the patella. Preferably, the device for applying medial pressure includes a patella pad, and the knee enveloping member is an elastomeric sleeve. The device for floatingly mounting the patella pad on the elastomeric sleeve includes a patella bracing strap and an anchor point on the sleeve spaced outwardly from the aperture.

    • A dynamic patella brace useful for both diagnosis and treatment of patella subluxation, wherein the position of a patella bracing pad is allowed to float to be automatically dynamically repositionable depending upon the amount of flexion and movement of the knee and the amount of tension and pressure applied is provided. The brace includes an elastic sleeve having an aperture for registration and alignment of the knee therein. Additionally, the brace includes a strap assembly to which a plurality of elastic arm members and a patella bracing pad are attached. The strap also includes an anchor which serves to isolate the patella bracing pad from a counterarm member to allow the dynamic repositioning of the pad when the knee is flexed. The patella brace may be used to facilitate positive diagnosis of patella subluxation whose symptoms may mimic other pathological problems of the knee, and, therefore, lead to an erroneous diagnosis. The brace may also be used for treatment and/or to delay or avoid the need for corrective surgery.

    • A knee brace including an elastic sleeve stretchable only in a circumferential direction having an opening in the front thereof for accommodating the kneecap of a wearer when in knee-encircling relation thereto. A resilient flexible circumferentially relatively inelastic annular, or alternatively inverted U-shaped, pad is loosely mounted to the interior of the elastic sleeve in the region generally surrounding the kneecap opening with the upper and opposite sides of the pad adjacent at least the top and opposite sides of the sleeve kneecap opening, respectively, to limitedly variably positionably locate the pad relative to the sleeve kneecap opening to permit the pad to self-align centrally of the wearer's kneecap notwithstanding limited misalignment between the sleeve kneecap opening and the wearer's kneecap. The circumferential relatively inelasticity of the resilient pad, particularly the portion thereof which is integral with the pad side sections, resists rearward movement and dislocation relative to the wearer's kneecap of the opposite side pad sections when the wearer's knee is fixed. Flat helical spring stays located exteriorly of the elastic sleeve and confined by inelastic fabric pockets sewn to the exterior of the sleeve are positioned over the side portion of the pad between side edges of the kneecap and the ligaments located in the side of the knee to enhance the compression applied to the knee when the knee is flexed.
